Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2012 Poteau High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories include: football, boys and girls basketball, baseball, fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls track, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls all-around athlete, wrestling, coaching and support and service.
The deadline to submit nominations is March 30.

Bernell (Nell) Graves

January 24, 2012

Bernell (Nell) Graves, 86, of Livermore, Calif., passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2011, in Livermore with her daughters by her side. She was born in Bokoshe on Dec. 22, 1925, the third and youngest daughter of Ada Belle (Martin) and William Edward Mason. Her father owned Mason Feed and General Store, where she worked while attending school in Bokoshe. Her father sold the business in 1942 and the family moved to Poteau, where she finished high school. 

William Haskell “Sonny” Reed Jr.

William Haskell “Sonny” Reed Jr., 78 of Howe died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, in Fort Smith, Ark. Sonny was born Sept. 18, 1933, in Monroe to William Haskell  and Beulah (Cain) Reed. Sonny was a rancher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Don Haskell. 

Lee H. Zuck

Lee H. Zuck, 89, of Poteau died Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, in Heavener.  Lee was born May 4, 1922, in Florence, Kan., to Arthur M. and Bertha (Poland) Zuck. Lee was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a retired Vocational Agriculture Teacher. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Belle Zuck; and grandson, Joshua Yandell. 

Howe girls, Spiro boys champions of County Tournament; Howe's Hillebrand, Spiro's Perry named Most Valuable Players

SPIRO — The Howe Lady Lions and the Spiro Bulldogs took home the championships of the 80th LeFlore County Tournament Saturday night at the Spiro Gym.
The Lady Lions defeated the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 31-27 in the lowest-scoring girls championship game since 1977 when Leflore defeated Spiro 27-20.
The Bulldogs got past the Poteau Pirates 51-43 to claim the boys championship.
The ’Cats claimed third place with a come-from-behind 47-42 victory over the Wolves Saturday afternoon after the Spiro Lady Bulldogs posted a 41-32 victory over the Bokoshe Lady Tigers.

What a week it was at LeFlore County Tournament

Last week, I talked about how excited I was for the 80th annual LeFlore County Tournament, and now it's over for another 51 weeks. Boy, does time fly when you're having fun!
There were a lot of close games. We crowned new champions, Howe's girls and Spiro's boys.
