Johnny Hugh Akins

Johnny Hugh Akins, 68, of Bethany (formerly of Wister) died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011, in Bethany. Johnny was born in Poteau on Aug. 3, 1943, to Jess Hugh and Odena Lorene (Nix) Akins. He was a carpenter. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bobbie Doris Whitman Akins; and son, Johnny Wayne Akins.

OSU proved, at least this year, it’s better than OU

STILLWATER — A lot of prognosticators believed that Oklahoma State would get the better of Oklahoma in this season’s version of Bedlam on the football field. But, like me, I didn’t think it would be as lopsided as it was, with the Pokes winning 44-10.
The Cowboys knew they had to not only win, but win big in Saturday night’s Bedlam game against the Sooners at Boone Pickens Stadium. In the first half, they did just that.

A short, brief column this week

So I can get all the information that needs to get into today's paper, I'm making this column a brief one.
But to Carl Albert Correspondent Mark Couch, I'm sorry, but I had to hold your story until Wednesday's edition.
The big hoop event in LeFlore County this week is the Choctaw Nation Tournament in Talihina, featuring the host team along with Howe, Pocola and Wister.
Bokoshe, Cameron, Leflore and Whitesboro will be in the Eastern Oklahoma State College Tournament this week in three locations — Eastern Oklahoma State College and Wilburton High School as well as Red Oak High School.

Howe girls win Poteau Freshmen Tournament; Heavener girls claim consolation championship; Spiro, Heavener boys teams lose on final day

One LeFlore County freshmen basketball team claimed a tournament championship Saturday afternoon as the Howe Lady Lions won the Poteau Freshmen Tournament with a 34-30 win over the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs.
Another county team, the Heavener Lady Wolves, claimed the consolation championship with a 37-20 victory over the Roland Lady Rangers.
Two other county freshmen teams suffered losses on the tournament's final day. The Spiro Bulldogs lost the boys title game 49-46 to the Roland Rangers, while the Heavener Wolves fell 36-17 in the boys third-place game.

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates got their first win of the season Saturday afternoon with a 48-40 win over Farmington, Ark., in the seventh-place game of the Citizens Bank Classic.
Howe 78, Keota 35: Friday night in Keota, the Lions (3-2), who led 26-16 at halftime, took control of the game in the second half as the outscored the Lions 52-19.
Leflore 60, Calvin 32: Friday night in Calvin, the Savages (7-1) won their sixth straight game.
Spiro 63, Stilwell 49: Friday night in Stilwell, the Bulldogs (2-0) led 19-16 after one period and slowly increased their lead from there.

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Poteau Lady Pirates suffered a 71-53 loss to Springdale, Ark., in the consolation championship game of the Citizens Bank Classic.
Howe 61, Keota 38: Friday night in Keota, the Lady Lions (5-0) jumped out to a 24-9 lead after one period en route to a 45-14 halftime advantage.
Leflore 55, Calvin 30: Friday night in Calvin, the Lady Savages (1-7) got their first win of the season.
Spiro 48, Stilwell 45, OT: Friday night in Stilwell, with the game tied at 41-41 at the end of regulation, the Lady Bulldogs (2-0) outscored the Lady Indians 7-4 in overtime to get the win.

Wister teams sweep Cameron Friday night

CAMERON — The Wister Wildcats avenged their earlier loss to the Cameron Yellowjackets by posting a 42-41 thrilling victory Friday night at the Cameron Gym. The Lady Wildcats defeated the Lady Yellowjackets in a foul-plagued game to post a 68-44 win.

Poteau wrestlers third at Jay Border Wars

JAY — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team was third at this past weekend's Jay Border Wars after going 6-3.
Poteau (6-4 in duals this season) posted wins over Stilwell (54-15), Gentry, Ark. (57-16), Diamond, Mo. (48-27), Springfield (Mo.) Central (54-16), Fayetteville, Ark. (72-18) and Keys (Park Hill) (65-30).
The Pirates suffered losses against host Jay (51-12), Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber (48-26) and Rogers, Ark. (42-26).
Poteau's Tyler Tustin, wrestling at 132 pounds, went 9-0 to win his weight-class title and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler among the lower weights.

Shooting in Muse - UPDATE!!!!!

UPDATE: In what may have been a family dispute gone wrong neighbors from the Muse area say the man killed the shooting late yesterday evening is Stacey Wright and the suspect in police custody is Chris Wright. The two men are brothers.

Howe girls, Spiro boys reach title games of Poteau Freshmen Tournament; host Poteau Lady Pirates suffer eliminating loss to Roland Lady Rangers

The Howe Lady Lions and the Spiro Bulldogs punched their tickets to today's title games of the Poteau Freshmen Tournament at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
Thursday night, the Lady Lions edged the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers 30-27, while earlier on the night the ’Dogs defeated the Heavener Wolves 46-39.
The host Poteau Lady Pirates were eliminated from the tournament with a 36-21 loss to the Roland Lady Rangers.
