The LeFlore County Soccer Association will have practices starting Thursday, with games starting Feb. 28.

The second annual Hungry Like the Wolf 5k/10k fun run/walk and two-mile walk will take place beginning at noon Saturday at Blues Park in Heavener. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Packets may also be picked up from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Heavener High School.
The entry fee is $25 per runner.

Lonnie Dean Franklin

Lonnie Dean Franklin, 62, of Panama died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in Fort Smith, Ark. He was born June 16, 1952, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Herman Calvin and Evelyn F. (MacFall) Franklin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a salesman for Best Buy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Calvin Franklin.

Lonnie is survived by his mother, Evelyn Franklin of Spiro; sister and brother-in-law, Cindy and Tommy Downing of Spiro; niece, Jessica Ford and husband Dylan of Wister; nephew, Jeremy Downing and wife Jessica of West Virginia; other family members, friends and loved ones. 

David Bell Williams

David Bell Williams, 82, of Pocola died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Talihina, where he was a resident. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at Willis Cemetery, Poteau, under the direction of Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.

Clyde Ellis Byous

Clyde Ellis Byous of Poteau died Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, in Fort Smith, Ark.

He was a self-made man who started in the coal mines of Oklahoma at age 14, then moved to the migrant farm camps of California in the migrations that began during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression. He married Martha Covey on April 1, 1945. He was 18 and she was 15. He became a carpenter in 1950 and went on to become a successful general contractor and cattleman. He and Martha were both private pilots who enjoyed flying their Cessna aircraft. He did very well in life.

Carl Albert baseball team sweeps weekend series from Highland; Vikings’ road twinbill Wednesday against Bacone JV canceled, will return to action Tuesday at home against Paris

It was a banner weekend for Carl Albert State College’s baseball team as it won all four games in a home weekend series against Highland, Kan., at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings rallied to down the Scotties 9-6 in Saturday’s first game, then took Game 2 14-8.
On Friday, the Vikings swept both games, winning 11-7 in the opener and 7-6 in the nightcap.

CASC softball team goes 4-0 in own weekend festival; Wednesday’s home doubleheader with Coffeyville moved to 1 p.m. Thursday

The Carl Albert State College softball team went a perfect 4-0 during its two-day Carl Albert Festival on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Vikings ended the two-day event with a 3-2 win over North Central Missouri and a 1-0 victory over Southwest Tennessee on Saturday after downing Southwest Tennessee 3-1 and North Central Missouri 2-0 on Friday.
Wednesday’s home doubleheader with Coffeyville, Kan., has been moved to 1 p.m. Thursday due to wet fields.

Whitesboro teams sweep district titles; Lady Bulldogs have dramatic rally in championship contest; both teams will play Thursday night against Pittsburg in Class B Regional Tournament in Bennington

MOYERS — The Whitesboro High School basketball teams swept the Class B District Tournament title games Saturday night with wins over Caney.
The Lady Bulldogs, who stayed alive in the playoffs with a 48-30 victory over the host team, Moyers, on Friday night, rallied from a third-quarter deficit to down the Lady Cougars 58-55 in the championship game.
The ’Dogs routed the Cougars 59-28 in their district title contest as both Whitesboro teams will play Thursday night against Pittsburg in Bennington in the Class B Regional Tournament.

Spiro teams sweep Poteau to celebrate homecoming

It was a happy homecoming for the Spiro High School basketball teams Friday night at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym as they swept their county rivals from Poteau on the hardwood.
For the third time this year, the Bulldogs took a close game and pulled away late to post a 65-56 victory over the Pirates. The Lady Bulldogs completed a sweep of the Lady Pirates as they posted a 47-38 win.

HOWE — The Howe Lady Lions celebrated Senior Night with a 53-42 victory over the Quinton Lady Savages on Friday night at the Howe Gym.
The Lady Lions, leading 25-22 at halftime, outscored the Lady Savages 20-5 in the third quarter to take a 45-27 lead into the final period.
Heavener 46, Stigler 31: In Stigler, the Lady Wolves led 8-4 after a period, 21-14 at halftime and 35-26 after three periods.
Pocola 57, Hartshorne 35: In Hartshorne, trailing 15-12 after a period, the Lady Indians outscored the Lady Miners 16-3 in the second quarter to take a 28-18 halftime lead.
