The LeFlore County Youth Services Golf Tournament took place Friday at Choctaw Country Club.
The foursome of Jim Janssen, Paul Quirk, Dwayne Roper and Mike Fisher took home first place with a 58.
Soon-to-be Eastern Oklahoma State College pitcher Chase Blake, Carl Albert State College women's basketball coach Jeff Tadtman, Poteau Pirates golfer Ryan Ward and Jim Waddle were runners-up as they were two shots back at 60
Sam Stacy, Tyler Atkinson, Cody Pugh and Kevin Stiles came in third as they carded a 62.

Heavener, Pocola softball players to be in Slow-Pitch All-State Games on Saturday; Lady Wolf an alternate, with three local umpires officiating games

Two local softball players, and maybe a third, will get one more high school game under their belts before hanging up the cleats.
Heavener’s Makayla Cheek and Pocola’s Madison Hudkins will be in the Oklahoma Slow-Pitch Softball Coaches Association’s All-State Games Saturday at the Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts in Edmond.
Cheek will play for the East team in the Large School All-State Game at 11 a.m. Saturday, while Hudkins will be on the East team in the Middle School Game at 3 p.m.

Arkoma, Panama basketball players in Saturday night’s Indian All-State Game

Two LeFlore County basketball graduates, Arkoma’s Tiera Brumfield and Panama’s Hannah Goines, will get one more high school game in before going to college.
Brumfield and Goines will be in the Indian All-State Girls Basketball Game at 6 p.m. Saturday at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville.

Red Oak Summer Slam to begin Monday, but new schedule is being drawn up

After being rained out thanks to remnants of Tropical Depression Bill, the 2015 Red Oak Summer Slam, that was to have started Wednesday, will begin Monday.
However, the original schedule is being changed, and it was not available at press time. Once it’s made available to The Poteau Daily News, it will be put up on our website’s sports page.
Tuesday’s schedule will appear in Tuesday’s edition, with Wednesday’s bracket action teams and match-ups to set up for crowning the tournament’s champion not being determined until after all action on the first two days are completed.

Pennsylvania man on the run for 20 years caught in Oklahoma

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A man convicted nearly 20 years ago of molesting three children in western Pennsylvania has been arrested as a fugitive in Oklahoma, where he was working at a Wal-Mart under an assumed name, authorities said.

Lynn Owen Cozart, 63, was arrested by Muskogee, Oklahoma, police on Thursday. The U.S. Marshal's Western District of Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force had an arrest warrant for Cozart, who skipped out on bail before he could be sentenced in April 1996, Beaver County District Attorney Anthony Berosh said Friday.

Officials seeking help in case of missing 16-year-old girl

Cherokee County Law Enforcement, We Help The Missing and the family of Promise Nicole Raines, a 16-year-old girl who went missing from Tahlequah, are asking for the public’s assistance in locating her.

Promise Raines is reported to have left her home in the early morning hours of June 8, 2015 and has not been in contact with her mother. Some reports said she may have left with a boyfriend but he has denied seeing Promise.

Rain, threat of showers washes out Red Oak Summer Slam for Thursday

It feels like May all over again. For the second straight day, the first day of action in the Red Oak Summer Slam softball tournament was rained out at all three sites — Carl Albert State College, both fields in Red Oak and Wilburton — for today after being so on the event’s originally-scheduled starting day on Wednesday.
As of press time, it was uncertain what was going to be done, or if the entire event was just going to be a wash.

Oklahoma human services agency to cut 200 positions

MIAMI, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Human Services will cut 200 positions while adding 300 child welfare workers to help address the high number of children in state custody, director Ed Lake said Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Sheree Powell estimated that up to 60 of the 200 positions are currently filled by employees. The agency is offering a voluntary severance package that includes longevity and service payments to the workers, but if not enough people accept the buyout offer, a reduction in force might be implemented.
