Poteau football team shines in Thursday’s four-way scrimmage

Third-year Poteau football coach Greg Werner was a pretty happy camper after how he saw his Pirates perform in Thursday night’s final preseason tune-up in a four-way scrimmage with host Tahlequah, Hilldale and Wagoner at Northeastern State University.
The Pirates scored seven times against the other three teams. Dalton Smith had a 6-yard touchdown run and Roger Barcheers a 5-yard TD against the host Tigers.
Smith had a 13-yard scoring run and Elijah Price a 12-yard TD run against the Hornets, while Austin Archey had a 3-yard touchdown run against the Bulldogs.

Poteau girls blank Spiro

After a rough outing against the Muldrow Lady Bulldogs 48 hours before, the Poteau Lady Pirates looked sharper — and got a win as a result as they blanked the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 4-0 Thursday afternoon.

Patrick Lynch Public Library's La Fiesta tickets for sale

Tickets for the Friends of the Patrick Lynch Public Library's La Fiesta are on sale.

The event will take place Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Poteau.

The fundraising fiesta will feature a taco bar.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

Tickets can be purchased the Patrick Lynch Public Library.

Heavener Chamber to hold multi-cultural festival

The Heavener Chamber of Commerce will hold its first annual Multi-Cultural Festival next month.

The event is slated for Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to dark at the Heavener City Park located next to Blues Ball Park south of Heavener.

The day will feature a mix of Latin/Mexican music, bluegrass music and Native American dance.

There will be food from various cultures as well as several vendors and games.

Frankie Thacker

Frankie Thacker, 79, of Howe died Aug. 29, 2014, in Poteau. She was born Oct. 7, 1934, in Forrester to Bob and Alice (Baker) Harris. She was a homemaker and manager of a garment plant.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

Wilma Pearl Entmeier

Wilma Pearl Entmeier, 89, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at Sparks Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark.

She was born on July 15, 1925, in Freeport, Ill., to Fred and Grace (Stichter) Entmeier.

She is survived by one son, Donald Edward Entmeier of Poteau; two grandchildren, Rick Entmeier of Cameron and Kristie Entmeier of Poteau; four great-grandchildren, Addisen Entmeier, Garrett Entmeier, Katelyn Campbell and Vallard Campbell IV.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Phyllis Mcllivanie of Temple, Texas, and Pauline Saxby of Lena, Ill.

Henry Myron “Cotton” Davenport, 71, of Heavener, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, in Fort Smith, Ark.

Harold Richard "Dick" Wilkerson

Harold Richard "Dick" Wilkerson, 81, of Poteau died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, in Poteau.

Dick was born Aug. 3,1933, in Rogersville, Mo., to Samp and Eva (Turner) Wilkerson. He was an educator from 1961 until he retired in 1988. He was a veteran of he U.S Army and he served in Korea. He continued his service in the National Guard for seven years. He was Poteau Chamber of Commerce president in 1988 and received the Man of the Year award in 1988. Dick was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Rogersville.
