GLENN MOLLETE: America's growing nest, time for some to fly out

July 25, 2014

Flying never happens until the bird leaves the nest.

President Johnson's Great Society is just over fifty years old. During this very long period America's great society nest has become huge and yet crowded.

President Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty in January 1964. He then needed a poster child for his new campaign and chose my hometown - Inez, Kentucky. The famous TIME Magazine picture of Tom Fletcher and his family sitting on a porch with the President happened about two miles from my boyhood home.

You have insurance on your home, your car, your health.

How about your retirement plan?
“People have homeowners insurance to protect against fires and floods,” notes independent financial planner Stephen Ng, founder and president of Stephen Ng Financial Group, (www.stephenngfg.com). “They buy insurance to replace their car if it gets wrecked and they buy health insurance to protect themselves from medical costs.

GLENN MOLLETTE: America's poverty, do something about it

July 17, 2014

I've never lived in poverty. However, like most Americans I have known a few tough times. I do know that poverty is not pretty. I've never been around a hungry family that was dancing in joy because of their dire situation. Poverty is hard.
I grew up in Martin County, Kentucky. We were supposed to be the poorest county in the United States in 1964 when President Johnson began his campaign against poverty.

DR. GARY L. WELTON: The VA scandal: Should we expand the federal failure?

July 16, 2014

Wikipedia has called it the Veterans Health Administration Scandal of 2014. An audit released in early June found that more than 120,000 veterans were left waiting or never got care, and that records were intentionally vague, misleading, and falsified. More recent reports, as announced by CNN, indicate that at least seven times in the last year, records that showed that veterans died while waiting for care were altered or rewritten by someone else; the changes listed the veterans as living, not deceased, essentially hiding their deaths.

MARVIN FOLKERTSMA: President Obama's Environmental Purity Agency

July 10, 2014

The rollout of the Environmental Protection Agency’s new draft regulation to limit greenhouse gases was accompanied by a brilliant political cartoon that showed a pair of hapless fellows with automobile mufflers protruding from their mouths, apparently to prevent any renegade CO2 exhalations from polluting the atmosphere with their climate-changing carbon halitosis. Call this part of the agency’s 97 percent solution, based on the frequently made claim that the number represents the percentage of scientists who blame climate change on human activity.

GLEN MOLLETTE: Illegal immigration, how many will the boat hold?

July 9, 2014

Two thousand two hundred and twenty-three people desperately tried to escape from the sinking Titanic. One thousand five hundred and seventeen perished, as they could not escape. Most of them could not escape because there were not enough lifeboats. There were boats for only eleven hundred and seventy-eight people. Sadly, the ship was not properly equipped with enough lifeboats.

GLEN MOLLETTE: Celebrating the Fourth, who will keep America going?

June 26, 2014

We live in an interconnected world. Energy, cars, televisions, clothes and much more are traded among the countries. There are positives with global trade. If we can't get a good price at home then we can shop elsewhere. Shopping is as easy today as clicking on a computer webpage.

GLEN MOLLETTE: Iraq again, hell never ends

June 19, 2014

Iraq - now we know where hell is. Hell is supposed to be a place of torment reserved for some people after death. Unfortunately, too many have ended up there before they died. Is there no end to the turmoil in Iraq and Afghanistan? We will never see peace and quiet in either of these two countries. Hell never ends.

JOHN C. WHITEHEAD: Just Shoot

June 11, 2014

How many children, old people, and law-abiding citizens have to be injured, terrorized or killed before we call a halt to the growing rash of police violence that is wracking the country? How many family pets have to be gunned down in cold blood by marauding SWAT teams before we declare such tactics off limits? And how many communities have to be transformed into military outposts, complete with heavily armed police, military tanks, and “safety” checkpoints before we draw that line in the sand that says “not in our town”?

DAVID L. HUDSON JR: Much to-do about history for divided high court

June 9, 2014

The U.S. Supreme Court remains deeply divided over the meaning of the first 10 words of the First Amendment — “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.”
