DAVID SEELEY: High School Hoops

March 15, 2014

What a high school basketball season it was for the 2013-14 campaign. LeFlore County had four teams make state — Arkoma's girls, Howe's boys and both Spiro teams.
Unfortunately, all four teams lost in the state quarterfinals. However, they were among the Elite 8 of their respective state tournament, and only eight total teams can say that.
So, congratulations to the Lady Mustangs, Lions, Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs. LeFlore County is proud of you.

"Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy," its National Donald Duck Day!
The prank-playing quackster made his screen debut in 1934 in "The Wise Little Hen."
His voice was the creation of Clarence Nash who brought vocal animation to the daring duck for 50 years.
Little did I know until I did some research that Donald is listed as the No.1 animated cartoon character to appear in films — 178 total. He also bests many comic book heros as he ranks No.5 for most published comic book character. Didn't know that either.

It has again been a busy morning in LeFlore County. An open house at Kiamichi Technology Center, run down a few crimes, progress, progress and more progress.
For those of you who don't know what progress is, it is the biggest special section published annually by Poteau Daily News. It showcases the growth and expansion of businesses, non-profit organizations, tourist attractions and many other locations in the county.
If you are a business owner and opened your doors in 2013, or if you made any changes to your existing business, give me a call. It is important to hear from you.

Good Monday morning everyone. Hope you had a great weekend and found plenty of fun and local activities to fill your days.
The LeFlore County Emergency Management Department recently received 500 weather radios that are available to LeFlore County residents for $1. You must provide proof of residency.

I had the opportunity to watch a video on Facebook that was a very heart warming story. I would like to share a bit of it with you.
The widow of Lt. Billie D. Harris of Oklahoma recently got the answers she had been seeking for 68 years since her husbands death during World War II.

DAVID SEELEY: One more county team makes state, two more to follow?

March 8, 2014

The number of LeFlore County high school basketball teams to make state this season will be at least three all total.
After the Arkoma girls made state this week, the Spiro boys made the Class 3A State Tournament with a win Friday night.
There will be at least one more county team join the Bulldogs as the winner of tonight's Howe-Pocola game will make state.
There's also a chance the Spiro Lady Bulldogs will make state with a win tonight.
Let's see what will happen tonight.

Good Friday morning everyone. I recently ran across a little historical fact sheet that provided some off-the-wall information. Finding it interesting I thought I would share them.
Don't forget the St. Paddy's Day 5K Saturday [March 8] morning or the Disable American Veterans Poteau Chapter's Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament that starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at their building north of Poteau.
There are several more events occurring over the weekend. For a complete list check out the Calendar of Events in the Poteau Daily News.

Hope everyone is having a great Throwback Thursday. The editorial staff at Poteau Daily News is rockin' and rollin' this morning as we have many places to be through the day.
Don't for the National Wild Turkey Federation banquet that begins at 5:30 tonight at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau. Support conservation.

DAVID SEELEY: Now, it's time for March Madness

March 6, 2014

Saturday marked the beginning of March. Now, we can really talk about March Madness.
Tomorrow (March 6), the high school basketball playoffs resume. One local team, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs are in the Class A State Tournament. Eight others hope to be there by the end of the week.

Enough is enough — let me have some sunshine.
After a couple of floundering balance acts trying to walk on ice this morning, it is official — I hate ice. I find myself praying for a sandstorm so that the simple act of walking to my car doesn't play out like some 007 action flick with somersaults, belly rolls and that stretching life saving reach for a life line — my door handle.
The highways are fine but I felt like I pulled into Atlanta this morning when I hit Poteau. Little improvement has happened overnight and the roads still look like part of the North Pole.

Sorry I am so late hitting the page today but it was a slippery, sliding drive to work. If you don't have to get out — don't.
I must say, I think this was my first thunder-sleet storm, also the first time I have ever seen three inches of sleet cover the ground. Not only did it thunder, sling ice and become bitter cold — hail fell from the sky. Such a strange twist of weather.
Not long and it will be boiling clouds, green glows, lightning strikes and twisters.
I am ready to see Old Man Winter be lynched by Mother Nature — let's have some sun.
