Arkoma football team in road scrimmage Friday night against Wright Christian

The Arkoma Mustangs, fresh off their historic 2013 season in which they won the schools first playoff game and made the Class C state quarterfinals, will begin their new season as a Class B school in Friday night's road scrimmage against Wright Christian in Tulsa. Action will begin at 6 p.m.
Due to youth, Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton is anxious to see what his players will do come game time.

Panama ready for first scrimmage Friday night; Hogs facing host Savanna, Atoka

Panama football coach Brandon Ellis is anxious to see just where his team is at after two weeks of practice. He'll get some answers Friday night when his Razorbacks will be in a road three-way scrimmage at 6 p.m. against host Savanna and Atoka.
“We're going to see how far we've come on running the plays we've set in,” Ellis said. “We want to see how conditioned we are. We need to see if we can sustain drives without turning the ball over.”

INDIANOLA — The Leflore Lady Savages split their road games in Monday’s three-way at Indianola, beating the host team 17-7 but losing to Savanna 8-2.
Spiro 14, McAlester 0, 4 inn.: In McAlester, Spiro pitcher Hannah Gilliam pitched a four-hitter, and her Lady Bulldogs were the recipients of nine McAlester errors.
The Lady Bulldogs scored twice in the opening inning, then added three in the second, five in the third and four in the fourth to put the game into run-rule status.

Red Oak boys too much for Whitesboro

RED OAK — Fresh off winning its own Red Oak Eagle Classic, the Red Oak Eagles picked up right where they left off this past weekend as they took care of the Whitesboro Bulldogs 15-0 in four innings on Monday.
The Bulldogs had only a hit by Austin Stepp to show for their offensive efforts.
Editor’s note: Nothing was reported on Cameron’s doubleheader at McCurtain by press time. Look for the details in Thursday’s edition. Monday afternoon’s Howe-Wister doubleheader was rained out and has not been rescheduled.

Wister boys fall in title game

RED OAK — The Wister Wildcats baseball team suffered an 8-0 loss to the host Eagles in the title game of the Red Oak Eagle Classic on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats outlasted the Crowder Demons 14-11 in Friday’s championship semifinals to reach the title game.

BEGGS — The Panama Lady Razorbacks went 2-2 over the weekend at the Beggs Festival. Panama defeated Davenport 8-4 and Kellyville 8-2 but lost to the host Lady Golden Demons 5-0 and to Eufaula 4-2.
Panama 5, Quinton 4: Thursday in Panama, the Lady Razorbacks scored once in the first and third innings, then scored three runs in the fourth inning.
Howe 8, Hartshorne 4; Wilburton 7, Howe 0; Quinton 9, Howe 0: Friday at Hartshorne Festival, the Lady Lions went 1-2 on the day.

Leflore baseball team beats Smithville, but loses to Bosworth, Haworth

It was a rough weekend of baseball for the Leflore Savages baseball team. The weekend started good as the Savages edged the Smithville Braves 6-5 Friday at home as they dedicated their baseball field to John Ward.
However, Saturday was a rough day for the Savages, losing both games of a road three-way in Boswell. The Scorpions beat the Savages 11-3 in five innings, then the Haworth Lions run ruled the Savages 9-1.

The 2014 high school fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons got under way last week, with some teams taking home some hardware.
The undefeated Wister Lady Wildcats started the season 5-0, including knocking off the last two county champions — last fall's champions, Poteau, in their season opener and last spring's champions, Heavener. The Lady ’Cats beat the Lady Wolves twice in the Pocola Tournament to win the title. Both Wister and Heavener took home plaques from the second annual Pocola Tournament.
In baseball, the Wister Wildcats came in runners-up at the Red Oak Eagle Classic.

Poteau Pirates get first taste of football for 2014 season

Before the Poteau Pirates took the field for their preseason Red White Scrimmage on Saturday night at Costner Stadium, Coach Greg Werner told the Pirates, “We have had a good off-season preparation in the weight room, and now it is time to earn a position.”
The scrimmage was broken down into 12-play series which featured the first line defense against the first offense and the second units facing off.
