Hogs were dominant all-around against UAB on homecoming

One issue Arkansas had going into its homecoming game against Alabama-Birmingham on Saturday at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium was the hope of reviving its running game.
It had flourished in September, including a win at Texas Tech and an overtime loss to Texas A&M, but struggled the previous two weeks in Southeastern Conference losses to Alabama and Georgia.

Heavener runners place at Class 3A State Cross Country Meet in Shawnee

SHAWNEE — While Heavener cross country athletes Barbara Johnson and Frank Cruz did not win state titles, they did place in Saturday’s Class 3A State Meet at Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
Johnson finished 34th with a time of 13:42.27, while Cruz was 56th with a time of 19:26.44.

Poteau runner makes state, but Lady Pirates finish 10th at Class 4A Regional Meet

TULSA — Poteau’s Kandace Standridge won the 800-meter run state title at last spring’s Class 4A State Meet. Next weekend, she’ll have a shot at another state title.
Standridge grabbed the third out of seven individual berths to next weekend’s state meet by finishing 10th in Saturday’s Class 4A Regional Meet at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. She had a time of 14:04.01.

Get ready for a spooky night of football next Friday

A lot of times, we’ll look at a schedule to see who our favorite teams are playing. Afterwards, we then look at the dates of those games. How many of you happened to notice that the Week 9 high school football games for Friday night will be played on Halloween?
That’s right, it’s going to be a spooky night of high school football for the eight LeFlore County high school football teams. Hopefully, our fans will get “treated,” not “tricked,” with favorable outcomes.

The 2014-15 Poteau Buccaneer Basketball League will begin its season soon. Anyone wishing to coach a team needs to call Billy Bond at (918) 647-1939 or by e-mail at parcball@windstream.net for additional information. Coaches are needed for all age groups. If enough players are signed up for each age group, the draft for the upcoming season will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Poteau City Hall.

Panama routs Wilburton Diggers third straight victory on Friday

PANAMA — The Panama Razorbacks won for the third straight outing Friday night at George Ollie Stadium as the Hogs routed the Wilburton Diggers 49-6 in District 2A-6 action.

Vian spoils Senior Night for Pocola

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians were hoping they could sent their seniors out winners for the final time at John Carter Field. The visiting Vian Wolverines had other ideas.
The Wolverines spoiled Senior Night for the Indians with a 68-0 shutout Friday night in District 2A-6 action.

Wetumka too much for Arkoma

WETUMKA — The homestanding Wetumka Chieftains proved to be too much for the Arkoma Mustangs as the Chieftains prevailed 63-14 Friday night in District B-4 action. The came was called in the third quarter due to the mercy rule.

The closing words of the legendary opening to the classic television show “Star Trek” said, “... to go where no man has gone before.” Two Heavener High School cross country runners, Frank Cruz and Barbara Johnson, will go where they've never gone before — the Class 3A State Meet, which will be this morning at Shawnee's Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.

Senior cross country runner hopes to make state in first-ever season to run; Pirates, Lady Pirates will run this afternoon at regional meet

For Poteau Pirate senior cross country runner Daniel Delgadillo, he hopes he will cap his first and only season of running with a berth to next weekend's Class 4A State Meet at Shawnee's Gordon Cooper Vo-Tech Center.
“I'm very excited,” said Delgadillo, whose Pirates will run at the Class 4A Regional Meet at 2:30 this afternoon at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa after the Lady Pirates' regional meet at 2 p.m. “This is my first year to do cross country. If we make state, I think I'd be very excited at the opportunity.”
