Poteau Pirates finally home, entertain Campus Friday night; kickoff for contest moved up to 7 p.m. from 7:30 p.m.

It probably seems like forever since the Poteau Pirates were at Costner Stadium. That will change Friday night with the Pirates’ home opener against the Campus Colts from Haysville, Kan., south of Wichita. Kickoff will be 7 p.m., moved up from its original 7:30 p.m. start.
“It’s nice to be at home,” Poteau coach Greg Werner said.” For as long as we’ve been practicing, we haven’t been home yet. We’re glad to be home.”

Arkoma looks to rebound against No. 3 Dewar

The Arkoma Mustangs felt like they let one get away last week against Gans in the District B-4 opener, losing 48-42 after having a 42-32 lead after three periods.
“I think we’re a little down, but we had a good practice [Tuesday],” Arkoma coach Mark Weatherton said. “They know they have to get over it. We talked about the Maud loss last year. We lost a close one, and we still came back and made the playoffs. I think they understand that they just have to be frustrated and go on with it.”

Pocola welcome Quinton for home opener

After not being home since last season, the Pocola Indians finally will get to play in their backyard at John Carter Field. The Indians will entertain the Quinton Savages at 7 p.m. Friday in their 2014 home opener, which will begin a four-game homestand.
“Our kids are ready to play at home,” Pocola coach Rick Lang said. “We’ve got a four-game homestand as we go into district play. Hopefully, we’ll be able to play well at home and make it an advantage for us.”

Poteau senior tight end, linebacker glad to be home

For the first time since the Class 4A state quarterfinals against Clinton last November, the Poteau Pirates will play an actual game when they entertain Campus High School from Haysville, Kan., at 7 p.m. Friday at Costner Stadium. Senior tight end/linebacker Kade McMillin is glad to finally be back home.
“I feel like we're going to have better preparation,” he said. “We'll be more prepared to play in front of our home crowd. We're ready to see what we can do out here [at Costner Stadium]. The crowd staying in the game helps the players stay hyped up. It helps out a lot.”

Top four seeds make LeFlore County Softball Tournament winner’s-bracket semifinals

The seeding for the 2014 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, at least through Day 1, held true Tuesday in Panama.
The top four seeds, Panama, Wister, Heavener and Spiro, advanced to tonight’s winner’s-bracket semifinals.
The Lady Razorbacks beat Whitesboro 10-1, while the Lady Wildcats blanked Howe 8-0. The Lady Wolves, who won the 2014 Slow-Pitch LCT in April at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex, knocked off the six-time defending fast-pitch county champion Poteau Lady Pirates 7-1. The Lady Bulldogs scored late to nip Pocola 4-3.

HOWE — The Wister Wildcats took a pair of games from the Howe Lions on Tuesday at Lions Field, taking the first game 9-3 and the second contest 14-1.
In the opener, the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Lions cut the deficit to 2-1 after two innings.
The ’Cats, thanks to a single run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth, took a 5-1 lead, but the Lions responded with a two-run fifth inning to cut Wister’s lead to 5-3 going into the sixth inning. However, that was as close as Howe got.

PKMS teams sweep Van Buren

The Pansy Kidd Middle School football teams kept their perfect record intact Tuesday with home wins over the Van Buren [Ark.] Butterfield Trail Blazers at Costner Stadium.
The eighth-grade Raiders made it 3-for-3 on the season with an 18-6 victory, right after the seventh-grade Raiders did likewise with a 32-8 win.
Both Raider teams and the Poteau Pirates freshmen will be in a tripleheader of football next Tuesday at Stigler, with games beginning at 5:30 p.m. The three local teams will take a combined undefeated record of 7-0 into Haskell County.

Class A’s second-ranked Talihina faces 2A’s eighth-ranked Christian Heritage Academy on Friday night

The Talihina Golden Tigers, who are ranked second in the Class A Poll for the second straight week, will get their toughest test so far this young season when they meet the Christian Heritage Academy Crusaders at 7 p.m. Friday in Del City. Both teams are 2-0.
The Golden Tigers won their home opener last Friday night, handling the Antlers Bearcats 52-14 at Doc Robinson Stadium. A season ago, the ’Cats had a lead on the Tigers as late as the third quarter, but the locals vowed not to let that happen again.

Bokoshe Tigers end season-beginning, three-game homestand Friday night, entertain Destiny Christian

The Bokoshe Tigers football team is hoping the third time will be the charm on their season-beginning, three-game homestand to start the 2014 season.
After the Tigers (0-2) lost to Arkoma and Bowlegs in their first two home games of the season, Bokoshe will try to win the third game of the season Friday night when they entertain Destiny Christian at 7:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.

Panama football team looks to rebound Friday night against Warner Eagles; game time has been moved up to a 7 p.m. start

Last Friday night’s 26-20 loss to the Sallisaw-Central Tigers at George Ollie Stadium was about as devastating as possible, since the Tigers never led until they scored the game-winning touchdown with 10 seconds left.
