CINCINNATI (AP) — Mike Trout flashed the skill that puts him at the front of baseball’s new generation, just moments after four of the all-time greats walked off the field.
Trout, who is the nephew of retired City of Poteau Water Department employee Charles Busonick and his wife Sandra, became the first player in 38 years to homer leading off an All-Star Game, then became the first player to take home the Midsummer Classic’s Most Valuable Player Award two years in row.
The duo of Justin Ary and Zach Oliver edged Andrew Dahl and Will Fogelman by a stroke to win the championship flight of the 2015 Spider Webb Invitational, which took place Saturday and Sunday at both Choctaw and Wolf Ridge country clubs. Ary and Oliver carded a 128, while Dahl and Fogelman had a 129.
The Poteau Lady Pirates soccer team will face the host Greenwood [Ark.] Lady Bulldogs at 5:30 this afternoon in the Greenwood Summer League.
The Lady Pirates then will face the Fort Smith [Ark.] Southside junior varsity at 6:40 p.m. Thursday in Greenwood Summer League action.
When action returns to the gridiron this fall, there will be a new traveling league for Poteau youth as the City of Poteau Bandit Travel Football League will be inaugurated. Instead of having one team per grade, there will be a combined third-fourth grade team and a fifth-sixth grade squad — with the league option of having a “junior varsity” type game for each team if it’s warranted.
