CASC teams split home games with NOC-Tonkawa; Carl Albert basketball teams visit Murray State on Monday night

Thanks to Bria Caldwell's 20 points and Kilah Cummings' 16 points, the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings held off a furious comeback in their 79-77 win over the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks on Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Getting five double-figure scorers and shooting 49.1 percent from the field proved to be the difference for the Mavericks in their 79-67 win over the Vikings in Monday night's nightcap.

ARKOMA — The Howe Lady Lions bounced back from their first loss of the season to get their third victory in as many tries against the Arkoma Lady Mustangs. The Lady Lions, who beat the Lady Mustangs in the title games of both the Green Valley Conference Tournament and the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament, got their third win over their conference rivals as they left town with a 71-54 victory in Monday night’s game at the Arkoma Gym.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the opening period to take control of the game.

ARKOMA — The Howe Lions got a 58-41 road victory over the Arkoma Mustangs on Monday night at the Arkoma Gym.
The Lions jumped out to a 13-6 lead after a period en route to a 28-19 halftime advantage.
Cameron 82, Indianola 37: In Cameron, the Yellowjackets jumped out to an 18-4 lead after a period and were never headed.
Whitesboro 65, Clayton 51: In Clayton, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 25-8 lead after one quarter and never relinquished their advantage.

Poteau wrestler places in Tulsa Bishop Kelley Tournament; Pirates will be in road triangular Thursday at FS Northside with Berryville, Ark.

TULSA — Poteau High School wrestler Roderick Hornbuckle placed sixth at 138 pounds in this past weekend’s Tulsa Bishop Kelley Tournament, which was heavily loaded with Class 6A and 5A teams.
The Pirates will be in a newly-scheduled road triangular Thursday night at Fort Smith [Ark.] Northside with Berryville, Ark. Action will begin at 6 p.m.

The LeFlore County Soccer Association will have a coaches meeting next Tuesday.
Practices will start the week of Feb. 19, with games starting Feb. 28.

The second annual Hungry Like the Wolf 5k/10k fun run/walk and two-mile walk will take place beginning at noon Feb. 21 at Blues Park in Heavener. Race-day registration and packet pick-up will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Packets may also be picked up from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday at Heavener High School.
The entry fee is $20 per runner until Friday. From Saturday until race day, the entry fee increases to $25 per runner.

CASC baseball team goes 1-2 in home-opening series against Barton County over weekend; Carl Albert State College Vikings entertain Seminole State this afternoon

The Carl Albert State College Vikings baseball team went 1-2 in its season-opening home series against Barton County, Kan., this past weekend at Ival Goodman Field.
The Vikings won Saturday afternoon's nightcap 8-2 after losing the opener 3-1. Barton County took the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 win in 10 innings.
The Vikings will be home this afternoon for a nine-inning game and a seven-inning contest beginning at noon today at Ival Goodman Field.

RIP, Dean Smith; Class A, B playoffs begin at week's end

This past weekend indeed was a sad one for basketball fans, especially those of college hoops, with the passing of legendary North Carolina men's coach Dean Smith.
Coach, thanks for all you did for the sport. RIP, Dean Smith.
Class A, B Playoffs Start This Week
While it just seems like the basketball season began, the postseason has arrived — at least for the Class A and B teams of the county.
The Class A and B district tournaments will begin at week's end, with the district champions and runners-up advancing to the regional tournament next week.

Organization of Rural Elementary Schools Playoff Roundup

It was a pretty good day for LeFlore County’s Organization of Rural Elementary Schools as the 2015 playoffs began on Saturday.
In the Division II playoffs, both Hodgen teams posted wins Saturday at McAlester Frink-Chambers Middle School. The ’Dogs got past Lane 41-37, while the Lady Bulldogs routed Idabel Denison 32-9.
In the Division II playoffs, the Shady Point Warriors won their postseason opener, beating Tannehill 43-39 Saturday at Frink-Chambers Middle School to set up a match-up with Harmony, which took place Monday night at the same site.

Poteau teams suffer road losses to Muldrow

A basket with seven seconds left in regulation was the game-winner for the Muldrow Bulldogs, who celebrated homecoming with a 48-47 victory over the Poteau Pirates on Friday night in Muldrow.
The Lady Pirates had an early lead, but from there it was all Lady Bulldogs as they made it a homecoming sweep of Poteau with a 42-25 victory.

RED OAK — The Howe Lady Lions will have to wait until next season to try for another unbeaten season.
The Red Oak Lady Eagles handed the Lady Lions their first loss of the season with a 65-52 win Friday night at C.C. Gillespie Fieldhouse.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 12-5 lead after a period en route to a 32-17 halftime lead.
Heavener 38, Talihina 21: On Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium in Talihina, leading 7-6 after a quarter, the Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Golden Tigers 18-5 in the second period to take a 25-11 halftime lead.
