Panama girls have new basketball coach

Billy Leaptrot will now get his chance to live out his dream — coaching.
Leaptrot will be the new Panama Lady Razorbacks basketball coach, taking over for Dennis Wright who became the girls coach at Sallisaw-Central High School.
“I just graduated in May from UAFS [the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith], so this will be my first coaching job,” Leaptrot said Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse on his first day to see his new team. “I’m ready to hit the ground running.”

Poteau golfer in top 20 at Stacy Lewis Open

ROGERS, Ark. — Poteau golfer Cody Shore finished in the top 20 at this week's KPMG Stacy Lewis Junior Open at Lost Springs Golf and Athletic Club.
Shore, who won the Class 4A state title last month, finished tied for 19th with a 75-75-72—222, 6-over par.
The winner of the boys division was Kyler Tate of Winter Garden, Fla., who shot a 68-68-71—207, 9-under par to best the field of 54 golfers.

Howe basketball player given medical hardship to play her 'senior' season

This past basketball season was a scary one for 2014 Howe High School senior basketball player LuAnn Davis.
During the 2014 LeFlore County Tournament, she collapsed at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. Davis, who had dealt with heart issues in the past, had the biggest issue of them all. She had open-heart surgery in Little Rock, Ark., to repair the damage. She made a full recovery, but could not return to action on the hardwood.

CASC athletes, softball team earn honors for 2013-14 season

Five Carl Albert State College athletes and the Lady Vikings softball team were honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association for the 2013-14 season.
Four athletes, softball player and former Poteau Lady Pirate, Meagan Ryburn, baseball players Cody Luman of Wister and Carter Cumbie and basketball player Taylor Rains all earned Exemplary Academic Achievement Awards.
Lady Viking softball player Karlee Loula received the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.

Martin, McGee top field to win Wister tournament

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its final tournament of the 2014 circuit Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 32 boats with 58 anglers who caught a grand total of 110 fish that weighed a collective total of 255.77 pounds. Each fish averaged weighing 2.33 pounds, and 19 limits were caught.
Randy Martin and Bucky McGee bested the field with a total of 19.12 pounds, including Martin’s big bass winner of 5.31 pounds. The duo pocketed $725, while Martin got an additional $290 for his big bass winner.
