It's football tab week for me, so I may not visit too many diamonds this week

I know this column is about the action on the diamond, but I wanted to let you know since this week I'll be preparing the 2014 LeFlore County Gridirion Preview football special section, I may not be out at the diamond as I would normally be.
Just be patient with this humble sports writer. The coverage won't slack off, nor will it not get reported throughout the week. I'll just need a little more help than normal.
Next week, it will be more of a “normal” week [assuming those actually exist], and I'll be able to get back to a normal routine of covering events.

A humid scrimmage for Poteau, Heavener

It was hot and humid for the Poteau Pirates and the Heavener Wolves in their football scrimmage Friday night at Heavener’s Harvey Stadium.
Both teams appeared to be primed for their county rivals, even though it was listed as a scrimmage.
The Wolves are being led by a new coach Sam Hembree, a home grown Wolf.
Both teams ran 12-play series for both first and second units.
One could sense an upbeat attitude by the Wolves. Both teams played on level ground for about the first 40 plays, but at that point the depth of the Pirates began to come to the forefront.

TULSA — The Arkoma Mustangs football team lit up the scoreboard in its first preseason scrimmage of the 2014 season Friday night against host Wright Christian and Tulsa Regent Prep, which is dropping down to 8-man football.
The Mustangs scored seven touchdowns. Two players had a pair of TD runs, Dakota Roam scored on runs of 5 and 20 yards, while Aaron Parsons had two 5-yard scampers.
Seth Key, who caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Harmon, threw a 5-yard TD pass to Tanner Sanders.
Talon Woolsey had the other score on a 20-yard run.

Poteau girls get wins over FG in RSU Festival, Okmulgee in Northeastern State Tournament; Lady Pirates play eight games in three days in two events

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team had a pair of tough outings in two tournaments last week.
In Thursday’s Rogers State University Festival in Claremore, the Lady Pirates beat Fort Gibson 6-5 but lost 6-4 to Glenpool.
In this past weekend’s Northeastern State University Tournament in Tahlequah, the Lady Pirates went 1-3 in games on Friday — beating Okmulgee 14-3, but losing to 3-1 to Locust Grove, 5-1 to Sallisaw and 10-0 to host Tahlequah. On Saturday, Poteau suffered a 14-1 loss to Owasso and a 9-3 setback against Henryetta.

The 2014 Poteau Bandit Football League is needing coaches for each of the two divisions of competition — the third-fourth grade division and fifth-sixth grade division.
If these voids are not filled, there will not be a season for either or both division for those who have registered to play.

Talihina football team looks good in Valliant scrimmage

TALIHINA — For the fans in attendance at Thursday night's Talihina Golden Tigers football scrimmage against the Valliant Bulldogs at Doc Robinson Stadium, it probably looked like the locals were picking up right where they left off.
“I'm not going as far as saying that, but they're really hungry,” Talihina coach Kelly Gravitt said. “They really looked hungry [in Thursday night's scrimmage].”
The Talihina offense scored six touchdowns and kept the ’Dogs out of the end zone.

Heavener cross country teams begin season in Haworth Invitational on Monday afternoon

The 2014 season for the Heavener Lady Wolves and Wolves cross country teams will begin Monday afternoon with the Haworth Invitational.

HOWE — The Howe Lady Lions got a home win Thursday afternoon by defeating the Leflore Lady Savages 11-5.
The Lady Lions broke a 4-all tie with a two-run second inning for a 6-4 lead after two innings.
After the Lady Savages cut the deficit to 6-5 in the fourth inning, the Lady Lions responded with a five-run fourth inning for an 11-5 lead.
Spiro 5, Whitesboro 1; Spiro 6, Buffalo Valley 1; Whitesboro 14, Buffalo Valley 4: In Whitesboro, Spiro went undefeated in Thursday's three-way, while the host team went 1-1.

Cameron seeking berth into CASC Invitational consolation title game; Leflore, Wister, Red Oak played in championship semifinals Friday in Howe; title game Saturday afternoon at CASC

The Cameron Yellowjackets tried Friday night to get to the consolation finals of the 2014 Carl Albert State College Invitational at CASC's Ival Goodman Field.
The Yellowjackets and the Smithville Braves battled in Friday afternoon's consolation quarterfinal, with the game tied at 5 after seven innings. The winner played in the consolation semifinals later that night against McCurtain. That winner will play the Oktaha Tigers at 11 a.m. Saturday for the consolation title.

Whitesboro boys get first win of season, split games in own 2014 tournament; Bulldogs played in consolation semifinals with hopes of playing for Saturday's consolation title at noon

WHITESBORO — The Whitesboro Bulldogs baseball team got its first win of the 2014 fall season Thursday afternoon as they routed the Panola Bearcats 13-0 in the opening round of the Whitesboro Tournament.
However, the ’Dogs lost in the championship quarterfinals 12-2 to the Boswell Scorpions.
The Bulldogs faced Braggs in Friday afternoon's consolation semifinals with the winner playing for the consolation championship at noon Saturday. The loser will be eliminated.
