Poteau football player signs letter with Bacone College

An old adage says, “Better late than never.”
That very well could be a thought going through the mind of Poteau football player Mason Jones.
Jones, who was a senior on last season’s Class 4A state runner-up team, signed a letter of intent Thursday to play at Bacone College in Muskogee.
“There was times when I had my doubts, but I just stayed the course,” said Jones, who played fullback and cornerback for the 12-2 Pirates.

The Wister Wildcats could be celebrating a state OK Kids coach pitch championship by night's end on Saturday.
The Wildcats defeated Morrison 8-0 to advance to tonight's championship of the 2014 OK Kids Coach-Pitch State Tournament in Weatherford. The state title game is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday, with the if-game at 8 p.m.

Wildcats softball team playing for national title; Stix eliminated from World Series

The Wildcats softball team based out of Pocola was playing for the national title at the 10-and-Younger USSAA World Series on Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Wildcats, who lost in the winner's-bracket final 8-6 to the Ohio Starz from Newark, Ohio, beat the Starz 4-0 in the first title game to force the winner-take-all game for the national title.
The ’Cats won their first two games in bracket play, beating the Sarasota [Fla.] Heat 5-2 and The Woodlands [Texas] Hotshots 4-0 before losing in the winner's-bracket final to the Starz.

The Panama Boomers lost their first game in the 2014 OK Kids Prep State Tournament on Wednesday at Fuller Ballpark at Crystal Beaches in Woodward, losing 4-2 to the Weatherford Majors.
The Boomers and the Poteau Pirates, who faced off Saturday afternoon at Town Creek Park for the regional title, met Thursday afternoon for the right to stay alive in the tournament.

The final session of the 2014 Choctaw Country Club Junior Golf Clinic will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The entry fee is $10 per child per week, which includes drinks each week. All ages are welcome.
At the end of the eight-week clinic, there will be a tournament, a cookout and a pool party.

There will be a coed softball tournament beginning at 8 p.m. Friday at the Arkoma High School baseball field and will last all night.
The entry fee is $100 per team. All proceeds will benefit the Arkoma High School football program.

Team Higgins wins open tournament at Wister Lake

The LeFlore County Bass Club had an open tournament Saturday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 14 boats filled with anglers who caught 16 fish that weighed a collective 45.05 pounds. Each fish averaged 2.82 pounds, with five limits caught. The limit was three fish per team.
Haskell and A.J. Higgins won the tournament with 12.4 pounds caught, including A.J.'s big bass winner of 5.06 pounds. Team Higgins won $280, while A.J. earned an extra $115 for his big bass winner.

Boomers, Lions, Thunder, Wildcats win OK Kids state openers; Pirates split games

Four of the five LeFlore County OK Kids baseball teams opened state tournament play with wins.
At the OK Kids Prep State Tournament at Woodward, the Panama Boomers edged the Pauls Valley Panthers 6-5 in Tuesday’s opener.
At the OK Kids Midget State Tournament on Tuesday in Blanchard, the Howe Lions beat the Roff Tigers 7-2.
The Heavener Thunder won its first game at the OK Kids Peewee State Tournament on Tuesday in Weatherford, nipping Kingfisher 1-0.
The Wister Wildcats defeated Henryetta 10-3 in Tuesday’s opening-round game of the OK Kids Coach-Pitch State Tournament in Weatherford.

Derek Jeter, the 40-year-old face of baseball, bid farewell to the All-Star game at the same time 22-year-old Mike Trout became the second-youngest player to earn Most Valuable Player honors at the showcase.

Wheat, Spikes three-peat as Spider Webb champions

Last May, Poteau High School golfer Hannah Ward three-peated as Class 4A state champion to end her prep career. Last weekend, two golfers did likewise.
Ward's coach, Randall Wheat and Jonathan Spikes of Danville, Ark., won their third straight Spider Webb Invitational, which took place Saturday and Sunday at Wolf Ridge and Choctaw country clubs.
Wheat and Spikes shot 66s on each day to win by three strokes over the duo of Kale Holton and Jason May, 132 to 135.
