January 2, 2015

IDABEL — The Heavener and Spiro high school basketball teams weren’t the only local hoopsters to see some holiday action this week. So, too, did the Talihina Golden Tigers.
The Golden Tigers finished fourth in the Idabel Winter Classic, which took place Monday through Wednesday.
Talihina, which opened with a 46-42 nailbiting win over the Broken Bow Savages in Monday’s opener, lost 54-42 to the Haworth Lions in Tuesday’s championship semifinals in a battle of two of Class 2A’s top eight teams in the state and fell 75-68 to the host Warriors, ranked in Class 3A, in the third-place game.

A New Year’s resolution

January 2, 2015

I hope you’ve had a great holiday season. The old year has now passed and we’re two days into the new year. Some people make New Year’s resolutions, and they’re hard to keep.
I’m going to try something simple this year. My friend, Nina Vu, a.k.a. the “Ping Pong Master, has a saying — “Wake up, be amazing and go to bed.” I like that, but I’m going to put my own wrinkle on it — “Wake up, be amazing, serve, make a new friend a day and go to bed.”

Spiro teams sweep Oden in final day of Bi-State Holiday Festival, but host squads lose to Acorn

December 31, 2014

The good news was the LeFlore County teams who were in the 2014 Heavener Bi-State Festival bested the squads from next door, but the not-so-good news was that the locals didn’t sweep the entire two day’s worth of games.
The Spiro teams went undefeated in Tuesday’s first two games of the day at the Heavener Gym, sweeping the squads from Oden, Ark. The Lady Bulldogs won 60-46, while the ’Dogs routed the Timberwolves 68-33.
However, the host Heavener teams could not follow suit as both lost to Acorn. The Lady Tigers held off the Lady Wolves 60-54 and the Tigers beat the Wolves 54-45.
