Playoffs getting hot and heavy now; Diamond Notes Column will move to Wednesdays beginning next week (WITH CORRECT SITE OF CLASS 3A REGIONAL TOURNAMENT)

The postseason of the 2014 fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons is heating up. Poteau will begin its softball playoffs Wednesday in the Class 4A District Tournament at Broken Bow, while Heavener, Spiro, Panama, Pocola, Wister, Arkoma and Whitesboro will be in regional tournaments this week with the shot at making state — which will be next week.
The Cameron Yellowjackets will have two shots at making next week's Class A State Tournament at this week's regional tournament, in which both the champion and consolation champion make state.

Leflore boys force if-game with Buffalo Valley, but Buffaloes ultimately earn district title

LEFLORE — The Class B District Tournament went the full distance last week, but unfortunately the Leflore Savages baseball team did not take home the district championship.
After the Savages beat the Buffalo Valley Buffaloes 4-3 in Friday afternoon’s first title game, the Buffs took the winner-take-all game 5-2.
The Buffaloes beat the Savages 5-2 on Thursday night after the Savages routed the Panola Bearcats 12-0.
The Savages end the season at 12-14.

Three Heavener runners place, two medal, at Saturday's OSU Jamboree

STILLWATER — Three Heavener High School cross country runners placed, with two of them medaling, at Saturday's Oklahoma State University Jamboree.
Frank Cruz was the lone Wolf to run, placing 37th (20:17.12).
Two Lady Wolves ran the course. Barbara Johnson was 29th (14:17.08), while Brenda Macias was 118th (20:32.92).
Cruz and Johnson medaled since they finished in the top 50.
The Heavener runners, along with Poteau's runners, will return to action at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chili Pepper Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

Pocola girls outlast Talihina to win Class 2A District Tournament

TALIHINA — It took all three games, but the Pocola Lady Indians were able to outlast the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers to win the Class 2A District Tournament on Friday afternoon by a score of 9-1.
The two teams split the first two games on Thursday, with Talihina wining the first game 9-2 but Pocola came back to win the second game 13-3 to force Friday’s winner-take-all game.

Spiro girls sweep Keys (Park Hill) to capture Class 3A District Tournament; Lady Bulldog ace throws no-hitter in Game 1 to highlight championship

The combination of Hannah Gilliam and Hallie Harper were dominating on Friday afternoon as the Spiro Lady Bulldogs swept the Keys (Park Hill) Lady Cougars 4-0 and 8-0 to win the Class 3A District Tournament.
Gilliam threw a no-hitter with three strikeouts in seven innings in the opener, while Harper threw a four-hitter with eight strikeouts in six innings.

Cameron boys get past Wister to win Class A District Tournament

WISTER — The Class A District Tournament had to go to the if-game before a champion was crowned, but the Cameron Yellowjackets outlasted the host Wister Wildcats 2-1 in the winner-take-all game Friday night to win the championship.
The Wildcats, who lost 3-1 to the Yellowjackets on Thursday, forced the if-game on Friday by taking the first game of the day 8-1.

Panama begins district play with road win over Antlers

ANTLERS — The Panama Razorbacks had their second straight strong defensive outing as they got past the Antlers Bearcats 14-12 in the District 2A-6 opener Friday night.

HEAVENER — Two crucial turnovers in the third quarter proved to be the difference makers as the Eufaula Ironheads rallied from a halftime deficit to down the Heavener Wolves 17-14 to spoil homecoming and the home opener for the locals Friday night at Harvey Stadium.

Arkoma Mustangs suffer road loss to Weleetka Outlaws

WELEETKA — The Arkoma Mustangs held with the homestanding Weleetka Outlaws in Friday night’s District B-4 contest, but in the end the home team posted a 58-12 win.

Bokoshe Tigers fall to Sasakwa Vikings

SASAKWA — The Bokoshe Tigers are still looking for their first win of the season.
The Sasakwa Vikings handled the Tigers 54-0 in a game that ended by the mercy rule.
The Tigers dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in District C-4 play, while the Vikings improved to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in district play.
