Poteau, Pocola girls, Howe boys, Savages LCT opening-round winners

The two-time defending LeFlore County Tournament girls champions, the Poteau Lady Pirates, took a step in the right direction in their three-peat efforts Monday night as they picked up a 42-23 opening-round victory over the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers as the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament got underway at the Howe Gym.
There were three other winners on the night. The Pocola Lady Indians got past their archrivals, the Panama Lady Razorbacks, 34-30 in the other girls contest at this site.

A 17-point halftime lead and five players scoring in double figures proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 84-72 win over the Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers on Sunday afternoon in Altus.
Getting a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds from Arkim Robertson proved to be the difference for the Pioneers in their 66-55 win over the Vikings in Sunday night's second game.

HOWE — The Howe Lady Lions will take an undefeated record into their game tonight in the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament after clawing the Bokoshe Lady Tigers 95-41 Friday night at the Howe Gym.
The Lady Lions jumped out to a 27-12 lead after a period to take control of the game.
Arkoma 81, Cameron 44: In Cameron, the Lady Mustangs jumped out to a 30-9 lead after a quarter and were never headed.
Heavener 62, Stigler 49: In Heavener, the Lady Wolves jumped out to a 19-11 lead after a period en route to a 36-21 halftime advantage.

CAMERON — The Cameron Yellowjackets ended last week on a high note, downing county rival Arkoma 53-40 Friday night at the Cameron Gym.
The Yellowjackets jumped out to an 11-9 lead after a period, which stretched to a 32-24 advantage at halftime and a 45-32 lead going into the final period.
Howe 74, Bokoshe 28: In Howe, the Lions roared past the Tigers early to take control of the game, jumping out to a 27-14 lead after a quarter en route to a 52-19 halftime advantage.

Poteau splits homecoming games Friday night with Sallisaw

The Poteau High School basketball teams split their Friday night homecoming games against Sallisaw at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The Pirates mined the Black Diamonds for a 61-44 victory, but Sallisaw took advantage of Kristen Fullbright’s nine 3-point baskets for a game-high 27 points as the Lady Black Diamonds spoiled homecoming for the Lady Pirates with a 72-55 victory.

The Poteau High School basketball teams’ Pink-Out Games will be next Tuesday against Spiro at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, with the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 8 p.m.

It's County Tournament Week, for the 83rd time in history

It's hard to believe that it's been a year since the 82nd LeFlore County Tournament took place, but it has. The 83rd edition began Monday.
The LeFlore County Tournament Guide was in Saturday's edition with the numeric rosters and team photographs of all 26 teams as well as the brackets — but it also has a typo by yours truly.

Pocola softball player signs with Connors State College on Friday

Pocola Lady Indians shortstop Desi Carter said that softball was “like family almost.” She’ll be with that “family” into the next level.
The senior shortstop signed a letter of intent with Connors State College in a signing ceremony Friday morning inside the high school gym lobby.
“I feel that I’m going to be happy there,” said Carter, who was one of three LeFlore County players to be named to the Small School East Fast-Pitch All-State Team this past fall. “It seemed like a good choice. I know I’m going to like it.”

Thompson wins first Pigskin Picks Contest

Poteau resident Tobey Thompson kept seeing one of the winners of the Poteau Daily News' Pigskin Picks Contest, Robert Swinford, winning quite often, so he decided to join in the fun. It took him 20 weeks, but he finally got a win.
Thompson bested all the contestants in last week's contest, going 4-1, to win the $25 prize.
The ballot for next weekend’s contest was in Saturday's physical edition on Page 5A. That ballot will need to be turned in by 5 p.m. Friday to be eligible for that contest’s $25 prize-winning check.
