When new Poteau football coach Forrest Mazey came on board last spring, he was well aware of the rushing expertise of senior Roger Barcheers, but he also knew that the Pirates were loaded and deep at all the skill positions. He introduced the Pirates to a full-blown no-huddle speed offense. What was learned at the abbreviated scrimmage Friday night against the Heavener Wolves at Harvey Stadium was that even though the offensive schemes are still in its infancy, Poteauâ€™s opponents must be ready for the Pirates moving the ball.
The Pocola Indians entertained the Gore Pirates on Friday nightÂ at John Carter Field in their first scrimmage of the 2015 football season. The Indians scored three times, while holding the Pirates out of the end zone for the entire contest.
TALIHINA â€” The Talihina Lady Golden Tigers got a home win Thursday afternoon, beating the Arkoma Lady Mustangs 10-4.
The Lady Golden Tigers scored three runs in the first inning, then added four more in the second to take a 7-0 lead after two innings.
Spiro 5, Roland 0: In Spiro, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after an inning, which was more than enough run support for Shakyrah Gladness, who got the seven-inning victory as she threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
Most of the final day of action at the 20th annual Carl Albert State College Fall Baseball Classic, with all of the final day's worth of games at both the Oktaha Softball Tournament and the Robbers Cave Shootout softball tournament in Wilburton, were rained out Saturday.
The CASC Classic finals between Wister and Red Oak will take place at 7 p.m. Monday at Poteau High School's Town Creek Park after the Wildcats play their regularly-scheduled home game at 4 p.m. against McCurtain.
The third-place game between Crowder and Kiowa will take place at 5 p.m. Monday at Town Creek Park.
Three local teams got victories on the opening day of the 20th annual Carl Albert State College Fall Classic, which took place at Wister and Cameron due to CASCâ€™s Ival Goodman Fieldâ€™s bleachers being classified as condemned.
At the Wister site, the homestanding Wildcats blanked the Smithville Braves 11-0 after the Braves handled the McCurtain Bulldogs 11-1. The final game of the night saw the Crowder pitcher Hunter Motley one-hit the Leflore Savages 9-1.
OKTAHA â€” The Heavener Lady Wolves and the Wister Lady Wildcats each posted two wins on the opening day of the Oktaha Tournament on Thursday. The Lady Wolves downed Warner 4-1 before handling the Sequoyah-Tahlequah junior varsity 6-0.
The Lady â€™Cats defeated last weekendâ€™s Pocola Tournament champion Vian Lady Wolverines 7-1, then beat Sallisaw-Central 6-1.
The Poteau Lady Pirates got their first victory of the season with a 7-4 win over Stilwell, but lost to the tournament-host Lady Tigers 9-3.
OKMULGEE â€” The Spiro Bulldogs had their moments in their first preseason football scrimmage of the season Thursday night against the host Okmulgee Bulldogs and three Tulsa schools â€” Hale, McLain and Webster.
VALLIANT â€” The Talihina Golden Tigers scored 13 touchdowns while their defense held Valliant to one score where the defensive man fell down in Talihina's first preseason scrimmage Thursday night.
