Spiro baseball seniors hope third time's the charm; Bulldogs meet Vian Wolverines in tonight's Class 3A state quarterfinals in Edmond

SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs baseball team will play in its third straight Class 3A State Tournament, which begins tonight for the ’Dogs with a 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal match-up with the Vian Wolverines.
The Bulldogs won their third straight regional title Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 win over the Eufaula Ironheads. The feeling that they had earned their third straight state-tournament berth was a special one.
It's still hard for the Spiro seniors to believe that they're preparing for the third straight state-tournament appearance.

Memorial Day Slam May 24-25

The first annual City of Poteau Memorial Day Slam will take place May 24-25 at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
The tournament is open to teams in three different age divisions — ages 10-, 12- and 14-and-younger.
The entry fee is $175 per team. The deadline to enter is Wednesday.

Spiro boys facing Vian at state

It will be a somewhat local battle in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night at Edmond Memorial High School as the Spiro Bulldogs meet the Vian Wolverines at 6:30 p.m. The winner will play at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the semifinals, with one more victory getting that team to the state title game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in downtown Oklahoma City.

Spiro Basketball Camps set for later this month

SPIRO — The Spiro Basketball Camps will take place later this month inside the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
The middle school camp will be from 1 to 4 p.m. May 21-23 and is open to boys and girls entering grades six through eight next school year. Cost is $30 per camper. Any campers registered by Friday will be guaranteed T-shirts.

Cameron golfer finishes fourth at Class 2A State Tournament; Whitehead's performance earns him All-State status

ENID — In some ways, third time was the charm for Cameron senior golfer Kody Whitehead. While he did not win state in his third straight trip to the Class 2A State Tournament, he finished the highest of all three years as he was fourth in this year's event, which took place at Oakwood Country Club.
Whitehead shot a 71-77-78—226 to finish not just in the top 10 but in the top five as he placed fourth.
In both of his first two trips to state, Whitehead tied for 14th as a sophomore and 11th last season.

Heavener boys go 1-2 in Class 3A Regional Tournament as season ends

HEAVENER — The 2014 baseball season came to a screeching halt for the Heavener Wolves on Saturday afternoon at the Class 3A Regional Tournament as Vian's Josh Bolin hit an RBI single to right field to break a 4-all tie to give the Wolverines a 5-4 victory in the loser's-bracket final and put an end to the Wolves' season.
The Wolves split their first two games on Wednesday on opening day, falling 8-7 to the Kingston Redskins but routing the Hugo Buffaloes 16-5.

Panama boys fall twice in Class 2A Regional Tournament to see season end

HARTSHORNE — The 2014 baseball season came to an end for the Panama Razorbacks on Friday at the Class 2A Regional Tournament, losing twice on the day — 4-2 to No. 4 Calera and 3-2 to Haworth in nine innings.

Poteau boys lose to Byng, Broken Bow in regional to see season come to a close

BYNG — The Poteau Pirates baseball team was looking to avenge last year's regional title winner-take-all game to the Byng Pirates, who got the state-clinching win last May at Town Creek Park. Poteau didn't get that chance as the Pirates lost 8-2 to Byng and 5-1 to Broken Bow on Friday in the Class 4A Regional Tournament at Stokes Field to see their season end.

Pocola boys make regional finals, but lose to Tushka to end season

CROWDER — The Pocola Indians baseball team played for the Class 2A Regional Tournament title on Friday, but they came up short in a 13-4 loss to the Tushka Tigers on Friday.
The Indians made the regional finals with a 5-4 victory over the host Crowder Demons in the first game on Friday.
