The first meeting of the 2013 season for the Poteau Quarterback Club will at 7 p.m. Monday inside the football fieldhouse at Costner Stadium.
The Quarterback Club would like to invite and encourage anyone that is interested in supporting the Pirates, especially the parents of players in grades 9 through 12, to attend Monday night’s meeting.
Also, anyone may be a part of the organization, whether or not they have a player on the team.

Spiro boys suffer season-ending loss to Verdigris in state semifinals

EDMOND — In 2012, the Spiro Bulldogs baseball team made the Class 3A State Tournament, only to suffer a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Verdigris Cardinals in the quarterfinals.
The same two teams met Friday afternoon in the Class 3A State Tournament semifinals at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Unfortunately for the ‘Dogs, the same result happened.
The Cardinals defeated the Bulldogs 10-4 to advance to today's state title game. Spiro ends the season at 27-7.

Carl Albert baseball team splits first two games at Region II Tournament; Vikings opponent yet to be determined for Saturday afternoon’s contest

BARTLESVILLE — The Carl Albert State College baseball team split its first two games of the Region II Tournament at Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings staved off elimination Friday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Mavericks after losing their opener 4-3 to the Western Oklahoma State College Pioneers on Thursday night.
The Vikings (23-30) did not know as of press time who their opponent would be at 3:30 this afternoon. In one scenario, the Vikings will play the loser of Friday’s Murray State/NOC-Enid game this afternoon.

Poteau soccer senior girls liked going out on a high note; Lady Pirates' season an emotional one in remembering Paige

The Poteau Lady Pirates soccer team, who are going to watch their Pirate counterparts try to win the Class 4A state title tonight with a win over Oklahoma City Santa Fe South, did not make the playoffs. However, they ended the season by winning their final two matches and three of their last four to end the season at 3-10 and 2-4 in district play. For the seniors, it was a grand way to go out.

Wister baseball player signs with Carl Albert

WISTER — Earlier this year, Wister baseball player Tyler Gibson signed with Seminole State College. A second Wildcat senior, Colby Turnipseed, signed to play college baseball at Carl Albert State College in a signing ceremony Tuesday morning at the Wister Gym.
“I just like to play college baseball,” Turnipseed said “It’s close to home. I really just want to go in there and do whatever they tell me to do — and play wherever. I’m looking forward to the opportunity. I’m very excited.”

Neff, Tankersly win tournament on Wister

The LeFlore County Bass Club had their sixth tournament of the 2013 circuit on Sunday at Wards Landing on Wister Lake. There were 35 boats with 62 anglers who caught 101 fish that had a total weight of 208.96 pounds. The average weight per fish was 2.07 pounds. Nine limits were caught.
Tom Neff and Paul Tankersly took first place with a stringer weighing 17 pounds even, which included Neff’s big bass weighing 5.99 pounds. The duo pocketed $770 for the win, while Neff got an additional $310 for the big bass winner.

Spiro boys beat Salina in 3A state quarterfinals; Bulldogs will get rematch with No. 1 Verdigris Friday morning in semifinals

EDMOND — Jason Hickman went 2-for-2 with a double, a run batted in and two runs scored to lead the Spiro Bulldogs to a 5-2 victory over the Salina Wildcats in the Class 3A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday afternoon at Deer Creek High School.
Spiro (27-6) advances to play Verdigris (30-2), a 3-0 winner over Oklahoma Christian earlier Thursday, at 11 a.m. Friday in the state semifinals.
The game will be a rematch of last year's state quarterfinals, which was won by the Cardinals, ranked No. 1 in OKRankings.com, over the ’Dogs 1-0 at Edmond Memorial High School.
