FORT GIBSON — After a rough road doubleheader loss against Tahlequah on Monday, the Poteau Lady Pirates took their frustrations out on the Fort Gibson Lady Tigers on Tuesday as they rallied for a 9-7 victory.
Down 2-1 after an inning, the Lady Pirates erupted for six runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-2 lead after four innings.
Leading 9-4 in the seventh inning, the Lady Pirates withstood a three-run rally by the Lady Tigers to hang on for the road victory.
Tahlequah 16, Panama 6; Vian 10, Panama 0: In Panama, it was a rough day for the Lady Razorbacks.

Turkey season is finally here

This weekend is the start of the youth turkey season in the southeast region. Area youth can go after a bird on Saturday and Sunday before the regular season starts on Monday.
Kids younger than 18 can hunt, but must be accompanied by an adult older than 18. For all regulations concerning youth turkey season, go to www.odwc.state.ok.us.
I plan on taking my boys and chase some birds around this weekend. Hopefully, we will get a chance to call in a gobbler, and they will get their first bird.

Poteau soccer boys district champs after beating Heavener; Lady Pirates beat Lady Wolves

It was quite a Senior Night for the Poteau High School soccer teams as they posted a sweep of district and county rival Heavener on Tuesday at Costner Stadium.
The Pirates, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, edged the Wolves 2-1 to win the district title, while the evening of soccer started with a 8-1 Lady Pirates' victory over the Lady Wolves.
The Lady Pirates will end the regular season at 5 p.m. Friday on the road against Porter Consolidated.
The Heavener teams will return to Harvey Stadium for games against Stilwell, with the girls game at 5 p.m. and the boys contest at 7 p.m.

Wister girls go undefeated to win district title; 2013 season ends for Pocola Lady Indians

WISTER — The Wister Lady Wildcats took the first step to making the Class 4A State Tournament.
The Lady ‘Cats won the Class 4A District Tournament on Tuesday by going undefeated, beating Pocola 8-0 and Coalgate twice by scores of 8-4 and 1-0 with the latter game giving the locals the district championship.
The Lady Wildcats (18-11) will find out on Monday their Class 4A Regional Tournament fate from the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association.
The season ended for the Lady Indians as after they lost to Wister, they fell 9-4 to Coalgate. Pocola ends the season at 9-12.

Carl Albert softball team suffers home losses to NEO; Thursday's games moved to Friday

It was a rough Tuesday afternoon of softball for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings as they suffered a pair of home losses to the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College Lady Norse, who took 5-0 and 7-4 victories. The second game went eight innings.
The Lady Vikings were slated to return to action at 2 p.m. Thursday at home against Seminole State in a doubleheader, but due to threatening weather conditions the twinbill was moved to a 2 p.m. Friday start at home.

Poteau’s Ward wins top medal at Elgin Invitational; Lady Pirates third as a team with sixth-place medalist

OKLAHOMA CITY — Poteau’s Hannah Ward, the defending Class 4A state golf champion, won the Elgin Invitational, which took place Monday afternoon at Lake Hefner Golf Course.
Ward shot a 73.
Ward wasn’t the only Poteau medalist. Cathleen Manlove was sixth at 84.
The Lady Pirates, the defending Class 4A state champions, finished third as a team at 355 strokes. Hilldale won the tournament with a 353, while Seminole was runner-up as it tied Poteau with a 355 but won the tiebreaker of fifth-place golfers as Seminole’s had a better score than Poteau’s.

Poteau tracksters compete at Greenwood Bulldog Relays

GREENWOOD, Ark. — The Poteau High School track teams competed in the 2013 Greenwood Bulldog Relays on April 4.
The Lady Pirates had another strong showing, highlighted by their winning the three relay events in which they ran.
The Pirates had two individual champions as Nico Hall won the 3,200-meter run (11:10.56) and Trevor Shankle took the shot put (44-6.75).

Carl Albert baseball team goes 1-3 with Murray State

Just as during the previous week against Western Oklahoma State College of Altus, last week's four-game series against Murray State College was a tough one for the Carl Albert State College baseball team.
Just as against Western, the Vikings went 1-3 against the Aggies in their two-day, four-game series.
The only win for the Vikings came in Friday's opener at Ival Goodman Field, as Carl Albert won 5-1 before Murray State took the nightcap 7-0.
Saturday afternoon in Tishomingo, the Aggies swept the Vikings by scores of 5-4 in eight innings and 10-0 in a five-inning, mercy-rule game.

Thunder clinches top seed in Western Conference

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder clinched first place in the Western Conference with a 104-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Thunder has played well down the stretch, and overcame a two-game deficit to the San Antonio Spurs, which the Texas team enjoyed just a few weeks ago.

Greenwood Bulldogs homer way past Poteau

Coming into Monday’s game against the Poteau Pirates, the Greenwood (Ark.) Bulldogs had not homered this spring — but they partially made up for lost time.
The Bulldogs hit three homers en route to an 11-2 win over the Pirates at Town Creek Park in Poteau.
