Talihina boys state bound; Golden Tigers beat Preston to win area tournament, facing Latta in Thursday afternoon's state quarterfinals at OCU

WILBURTON — It's hard not to think about deja vu right now if you happen to be the Talihina Golden Tigers basketball team.
Two years ago, the Golden Tigers beat the Preston Pirates to win the Class 2A Area Tournament at the McAlester Expo Center en route to making state for the fourth straight year and eventually capturing the gold ball — by beating Preston again.
One of the players on that team had the last name of Lockhart — with the first name of Taggart, who is now playing at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock.

Heavener powerlifters win regional meet, qualify for state

HARTSHORNE — Heavener High School's powerlifting team competed Saturday at the Class 3A Regional Meet.
The team was named regional champions and will compete in the Class 3A State Meet, which will take place Friday in McLoud.

Poteau boys soccer team takes second in Sykes Invitational; Lady Pirates, Pirates travel Tuesday to Hilldale

The Poteau Pirates soccer team came in second at the Sykes Invitational, which took place Saturday in three different locations in Arkansas — Van Buren, Fort Smith Northside High School and Greenwood.
The Pirates beat Van Buren 4-0, lost 2-0 to Northside and routed Mena, Ark., 10-0.
The news was not as good for the Lady Pirates, who lost all three of their games on the day. Poteau lost 3-0 to Van Buren, 2-1 to Northside and 3-0 to Mena.

NOC-Enid teams spoil Sophomore Night for Carl Albert

Northern Oklahoma College-Enid hit 26 of 31 free throws helping the Lady Jets to a 68-60 win over the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings to spoil Sophomore Night on Thursday at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Despite Adrian Webber's 14 points, it was not enough for the Vikings to win on Sophomore Night as they lost the nightcap 66-51 to the Jets.

Playoff match-ups set for Carl Albert basketball teams

It took until late Saturday, but the Carl Albert State College basketball teams finally found out who and where they will play their Monday night opening-round games in the Region II Tournament.
The Lady Vikings will entertain the Western Oklahoma State College Lady Pioneers at 7 p.m. Monday at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
The Vikings will hit the road to meet the Seminole State College Trojans at 7 p.m. Monday in Seminole.

Poteau JV boys, Heavener Wolves golf teams open season Monday

The 2013 high school golf schedule will begin for the Poteau Pirates junior varsity and the Heavener Wolves teams on Monday.
The Pirates and the Wolves will participate at the Stigler Invitaional, which will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Brier Creek Golf Course in Stigler.

Poteau baseball team opens season with chilly victory over Muldrow; Monday's game at Pocola canceled

This was the first baseball game of the year for both the Poteau Pirates and the Muldrow Bulldogs, and it was what you would envision it to be. With the exception of Michael Didway's one inning of pitching, the pitchers on both sides struggled finding the strike zone in Friday afternoon's opener at Carl Albert State College's Ival Goodman Field.

Spiro boys' season ends with loss to Lexington

BYNG — The 2012-13 basketball season came to an end for the Spiro Bulldogs on Thursday night as they lost 81-74 to the Lexington Bulldogs in the Class 3A Area Tournament consolation quarterfinals at Byng High School's Bill Kohler Fieldhouse. The local ’Dogs end the season at 18-9.
Kiowa Girls Make Class A State Semifinals
The Kiowa Cowgirls, featuring former Panama Lady Razorback Lauren Smith, made it to Friday night's Class A State Tournament semifinals.
The Cowgirls used a fourth-quarter rally to down the Fort Cobb-Broxton Lady Mustangs 55-47 Thursday night at Oklahoma City University.

Poteau soccer teams open season Saturday in Sykes Invitational

The Poteau Pirates and Lady Pirates soccer teams will open their 2013 seasons Saturday in the Sykes Invitational, which this year will be played at three different sites due to its normal site, Ben Geren Park, having its soccer field too wet on which to play.
Both teams will play back-to-back at the three sites being used this year — Van Buren (Ark.) High School, Fort Smith (Ark.) Northside and Greenwood (Ark.) high schools.
The Pirates will play Van Buren at 10 this morning, followed by the Lady Pirates facing Van Buren at 11 this morning. Both games will be at Van Buren.
