The phrase, “The Killer Bees” could be a good way to describe the Bandit Bowl IX title games Saturday afternoon at Costner Stadium.
The Boomers defeated the Bears 16-6 to win the fifth-sixth grade championship game, while the third-fourth grade title went to the Bombers as they upset the previously-undefeated Bears 20-0.
The two Poteau Bandit League travelling teams who were still in the postseason last weekend split their games.
The fifth-grade team reached Saturday's title game with a 38-8 win over Van Buren (Ark.) Green last Saturday at Costner Stadium. The win put the locals into the title game against Union Christian, Ark., at 1 p.m. Saturday in Van Buren.
The news wasn't as good for the third-grade team, which lost 18-6 to Van Buren White last weekend in Van Buren to see its season come to an end.
The 2012 football season for the Poteau Pirates ended Friday night. Even though the Pirates did not make the playoffs, they made all the fans realize that something good is about to happen and the future is bright.
This year the Pirates scored 270 while giving up 205. Poteau rushed for 2,620 yards and passed the ball for 798 yards, for a total offense of 3,418 yards. The defense held other teams to 1,299 yards rushing, but gave up 1,294 yards through the air.
Due to space constraints in today's edition, I'm not going to get too wordy this week.
However, let me remind county basketball coaches that I need their preseason questionnaire along with their schedule. The preseason questionnaires provide me the information needed to write the season-preview stories of our county basketball teams — like the story on Whitesboro's team in Thursday's edition and Howe's in Friday's paper.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Not that it should come as any surprise, but newcomer Kevin Martin has been a welcome addition to the Oklahoma City Thunder team. He averaged more than 18 points a game with Houston and has already shown consistency on the court with his shooting and ball handling. After scoring 15 points, with three 3-point baskets and five assists in his first game and following that up with 19 points, three 3s, three rebounds and two assists against Portland in the Thunder's home opener Friday night, Martin really showed what he can do scoring Sunday night.
The Carl Albert State College men's basketball teams suffered their first losses of the season, both to nationally-ranked opponents, in this past weekend's Oklahoma-Texas Shootout in Weatherford.
The Vikings lost 74-48 to 14th-ranked Trinity Valley Community College on Sunday, which came on the heels of Saturday's 82-60 loss to third-ranked Howard College.
The next game for the Vikings will be at 8 p.m. Nov. 13 against Cowley County, Kan., at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Razorbacks finally came through with a win as they celebrated homecoming with a 19-15 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The Razorbacks (4-5) were challenged all day by a good Golden Hurricane team (7-2), which saw its seven-game winning streak snapped but is undefeated in Conference USA.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — It's always frustrating on a losing team to know that it had a chance to win that respective contest. Just as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa failed to capitalize on getting five more points — missing a field goal and an extra point, while having a second PAT blocked by Arkansas defender DeQuinta Jones) — and the end result was a 19-15 loss to the Razorbacks, who got to make it a happy homecoming for the 64, 451 in attendance on Saturday at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
