Cameron boys take third at Red Oak Eagle Classic; Wister beats Howe for consolation title

RED OAK — Two LeFlore County high school baseball teams brought home plaques Saturday from the Red Oak Eagle Classic.
The Cameron Yellowjackets held off the Crowder Demons 7-6 to win the third-place game after losing Friday afternoon's semifinal 11-3 to the Stuart Hornets.
The Wister Wildcats claimed the consolation championship with a 9-1 win over the Howe Lions.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves got their 2013 fast-pitch softball season off and running with a pair of home wins Friday afternoon, beating Sallisaw 5-2 and Battiest 11-2.
Eagletown 12, Whitesboro 11: In Eagletown, the Lady Eagles were able to outlast the Lady Bulldogs.

Poteau Pirates have interteam scrimmage on Saturday night

The Poteau Pirates had their red-white interteam scrimmage Saturday night at Costner Stadium as they split their 63 players as equally as possible.
The Pirates started practice last week, put on pads Friday for the first time, and then staged a full-contact scrimmage on Saturday night, a scrimmage that was going to be used as a starting point for evaluating players.

Poteau girls go 2-3 at Broken Arrow Tournament

BROKEN ARROW — The Poteau Lady Pirates softball team went 2-3 to open the season this past weekend at the Broken Arrow Tournament.
Poteau beat Sapulpa 9-6 and Oologah 2-1, but lost 7-5 to Broken Arrow, 7-6 to Oklahoma City Putnam City North and 9-0 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah.

Pocola girls win own tournament with two wins over Wister; Lady Indian senior catcher wins tournament's Most Valuable Player Award

POCOLA — The Pocola Lady Indians softball team won its own tournament, but had to do it the hard way Saturday night.
The Lady Indians, who lost the winner's-bracket final 5-0 to the Wister Lady Wildcats earlier in the day, beat the Lady ’Cats twice by scores of 6-1 and 5-2 to win the inaugural Pocola Invitational.
The Lady Indians rebounded from the loss to Wister by outlasting the Stigler Lady Panthers 2-1 in a nine-inning game which went to the international tie-breaker to get to the championship round.
Stigler eliminated Cameron 6-0 to get the day started on Saturday.

Poteau, Panama to have red-white scrimmages today; Pirates go tonight at 7 p.m., Hogs go this morning at 11 a.m.

Two LeFlore County football teams will get their first game-like situation under their belts today as the Poteau Pirates and the Panama Razorbacks will each have their red-white interteam scrimmages today.
The Pirates will go at 7 tonight at Costner Stadium. The Poteau Quarterback Club will have burger baskets available at 6:30 p.m. for $4.50 and will also be selling its new T-shirts.

RED OAK — The Cameron Yellowjackets could be bringing home a championship at day's end.
The ’Jackets handled the Howe Lions 13-0 in three innings in the opening round of the Red Oak Eagle Classic on Thursday afternoon.
The ’Jackets (1-0) faced the Stuart Hornets Friday afternoon for the right to get to this afternoon's 3 p.m. title game to face the winner of Friday night's Red Oak-Crowder game. The losers will play for third place at 12:30 this afternoon.
The Demons edged the Wister Wildcats 5-4, while the host Eagles soared over the Whitesboro Bulldogs 16-0.

Host Lady Indians, Wister girls reach Saturday's winner's-bracket finals of Pocola Invitational

POCOLA — There will be at least one LeFlore County softball team playing for the title of the inaugural Pocola Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The host Pocola Lady Indians and the Wister Lady Widcats reached Saturday afternoon's winner's-bracket finals at 12:30 p.m. for the right to reach Saturday afternoon's 3:30 p.m. championship game.
The Lady Indians blanked the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs 10-0 Thursday night right before the Lady ’Cats edged the Stigler Lady Panthers 2-1.

Leflore baseball pitchers combine for two no-hitters in season-openers

LEFLORE — The David Morris era got under way in grand fashion Thursday afternoon in the season openers for the new Leflore baseball coach.
The Savages began the fall 2013 season with a pair of no-hitters thrown by a combined four pitchers as Leflore routed McCurtain 11-1 and Kinta 10-0.
The Savages will be in the Coleman-Calera Invitational, which started Friday night with two games — vs. Soper and co-host Coleman in Coleman. Today, Leflore meets co-host Calera at 10 this morning, followed by a noon game against Pittsburg — both games in Calera.

HARTSHORNE — The Howe Lady Lions went 1-2 in Friday's Hartshorne Festival as they routed Haileyville 12-1, but lost 4-3 to Quinton and fell 7-1 to host Hartshorne.
Battiest 8, Whitesboro 5: Thursday afternoon in Whitesboro, the Lady Panthers spoiled the season opener for the Lady Bulldogs as they scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Smithville 3, Howe 2: Thursday afternoon in Smithville, the Lady Braves scored twice in the third inning to break a 2-all tie to get the win. Two of Smithville's runs were unearned.
