The Mountain Gateway Sisterhood of Steel roller derby team will host Girls Rollin’ In The South (GRITS) at 11 a.m. Saturday at SkateReation in Poteau. This will be the first meeting between the two leagues in Poteau since both teams were nothing but newbies, a.k.a, fresh meat.

March 1, 2013

WILBURTON — Last year, the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers saw their basketball season end at the Class 2A Area Tournament at the Wilburton High School gym. Unfortunately for them, the same thing happened Thursday afternoon.
A 3-point basket by Silo's Mary Grider with 15 seconds left lifted the Lady Rebels to a 38-37 win over the Lady Golden Tigers in the Class 2A Area Tournament consolation quarterfinals. The loss ended Talihina's season at 18-9.

Opening day 2013 has arrived on the diamond; Poteau's baseball opener moved to CASC

March 1, 2013

We're back! My favorite time of the year has arrived as the spring baseball and slow-pitch softball seasons will begin today for a few teams and most everyone else next week.
For those new to the area, this column runs usually every Tuesday morning with the ins and outs, ups and downs, what's upcoming, the weekly schedules in both sports and Pitchers and Hitters of the Week in each sport — by the way, coaches, you may nominate players for those honors is you wish.

I bet you all thought I had disappeared

March 1, 2013

It has been a while since I last wrote, and the sports world just keeps a rolling.
The Poteau boys and girls had a tough weeked in the Class 4A Regional Tournament in Fort Gibson as their seasons ended sooner than hoped.
The Poteau Pirates wrestling team finished ninth in the Class 4A State Tournament. Two-time defending state champion Tyler Tustin had a chance to three-peat, but he lost by two points in the finals.

How 'The Downtown Cafe Friday Morning' tradition started

February 28, 2013

In 2005, Danny “The Doctor of” Love and Joe Gregory invited me to come to The Downtown Cafe in Heavener to have coffee with them at 5 a.m. I went and sat at a big, round table with Raymond “The Mayor of Hodgen” Ellis, Dick Roberts, Donnie “Killer” Killion, Joey Yandell, Lonnie “Lonzo” Renick and George “The Senior Statesman” Bailey.
Now, I was the youngest, and I talked way to much for the older Mr. Bailey. I also accidentally parked in his spot, and sat in his chair. I was quickly asked to move or he would do it for me.

NOC-Tonkawa teams sweep Carl Albert basketball teams

February 27, 2013

A career-high 21 points from Myeisha Williams wasn't enough for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 72-64 loss to the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Lady Mavericks in the first game of Tuesday night's doubleheader at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A strong 40-18 second half proved to be the difference for the 12th-ranked NOC-Tonkawa Mavericks in their 68-38 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings in the second game.

Fishing, baseball seasons are here

February 27, 2013

The buggy drawing that took place a couple of weeks ago at Wister was a huge success. I did not get my hands on all the winners' names, but I do know that Brad McMillin won a gun from J.R.’s Pawn and Gun.
We also gave away a couple of guns provided by Wister Pawn and Gun and Poteau Pawn and Gun. I really appreciate all the people who made this possible for all the kids at Wister who will be helped by this fundraiser.
