Angels outfielder with Poteau ties unanimously voted AL Rookie of the Year

November 13, 2012

NEW YORK — Mike Trout and Bryce Harper were teammates on the Scottsdale Scorpions last fall. The outfielders arrived in the major leagues on the same April day this year, both played in the All-Star game and they won Rookie of the Year awards a half-hour apart Monday, the vanguard of baseball's next generation.
The 21-year-old Trout was a unanimous pick as the youngest AL rookie winner, and the 20-year-old Harper edged Arizona pitcher Wade Miley 112 points to 105 to become the second-youngest winner of the NL honor.

A windy win for OU over Baylor; Stoops becomes Sooners' all-time winningest coach

November 13, 2012

NORMAN — In our state song, one lyric says, “... where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.” Those words were no truer than Saturday afternoon at Owen Field when the Oklahoma Sooners entertained the Baylor Bears in Big 12 action. If I didn't see a football field and players — and known I was indeed at Owen Field — I possibly would have thought myself to be at a place like Wrigley Field or Candlestick Park because it was so windy. Heck, some of the OU pom-pom girls had their pom-poms blow out of their hands!

Pokes handle West Virginia Mountaineers

November 13, 2012

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State Cowboys took down a struggling West Virginia team by a score of 55-34 Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium.
Enid's Clint Chelf showed good poise and command of the OSU offense, going 22-for-31 for 292 yards and four touchdowns.  Receiver Josh Stewart had a big game, catching 13 passes for 172 yards and two TDs and rushing for another.
“We had a good game,” said Mike Gundy, OSU's coach. “I think the biggest area of improvement for us is our coverage. Our guys really stepped up and made some good plays.”

The king is dead, long live the king

November 13, 2012

Alabama was knocked out of the ranks of the undefeated Saturday by Texas A&M, and now all the fans of the Big 12 are praying that at least two of the three undefeated teams — Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame — will run the tables. It is time for a Bowl Championship Series national champion that is not from the SEC.
A&M screwed up big time. If the Aggies would have stayed in the Big 12, they more than likely would be undefeated and have a chance to play for the national championship.

Howe teams seem to be early surprise on the hardwood

November 12, 2012

I know that we've only had two weeks of high school basketball, and that the football schools haven't started yet — but that changes this week as Bokoshe began Monday night at Clayton and Arkoma opens Thursday night at home with Cameron.
Two teams — both from the same school — seem to be early favorites as strong squads in LeFlore County, the Howe Lions and Lady Lions.

Howe teams sweep pair from Wister on Friday night

November 11, 2012

WISTER — The girls and boys games had the same results as Howe won both ends of the double dip against Wister, but how they got their victories were polar opposites.
The Lady Lions saw Wister level the score at 37-all, but then went into the ol' Carolina four-corner offense and played keep away from Wister and captured the game by the score of 47-42 as they won the game at the free-throw line down the stretch.
