STILLWATER — When you think about cowboys and longhorns, images of the wild west are bound to enter the mind. When thinking about the wild west, there's also gunfights and shootouts which also come to mind.
Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium, when the Oklahoma State Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns did battle in the Big 12 opener for both teams, it was exactly that — a shootout. In the end, Texas fired the last shot to defeat OSU by a score of 41-36.
STILWELL — In the pregame talk to his players, Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach, told his troops, “We need to go out and set the tone and the pace of the game right from the start.” Even though the Pirates scored quickly in the opening quarter, they lost their focus somewhere along the way, and the Pirates only led 13-7 over the upstart Stilwell Indians at the intermission.
The Poteau locker room was not the place to be if you were weak of heart. The Pirtates got the message the second time around, and went out and totally dominated the game as they won 40-7.
SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs football team got back into the District 3A-8 race as they won their first district game of 2012 and blanked the Idabel Warriors Friday night at McClain Stadium.
The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
TALIHINA — The Talihina Golden Tigers' offense scored early and often, and their defense shut down the Union Christian Academy Eagles to collect a 55-6 notch in the win column Friday night at Doc Robinson Stadium.
HUGO — The Pocola Indians football team bounced back from its District 2A-6 opening loss last week against Vian, but it didn't come easy.
After being down in the first quarter, the Indians rallied to force overtime, then Devon Martin's touchdown run in the extra period helped Pocola outlast the Hugo Buffaloes 39-38 in overtime Friday night.
HARTSHORNE — The Panama Razorbacks will have to wait another week to try to get their first win of the 2012 football season.
The homestanding Harsthorne Miners handled the Hogs by a score of 41-7 Friday night in District 2A-6 action.
SALLISAW — The Poteau Pirates freshmen football team jumped on the Sallisaw Black Diamonds early, and appeared to be in cruise control. Sallisaw got to within two points of the Pirates, but then the Pirates got great plays on the defensive side of the ball to set up Austin Archey on a 70-yard romp for a touchdown as they posted a 21-12 win over the Black Diamonds Thursday night at Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.
