January 22, 2013

It only took one day before the 81st LeFlore County Tournament saw an upset.
The Pocola Lady Indians, seeded 11th, used their physicality to wear down the sixth-seeded Bokoshe Lady Tigers in posting a 46-38 upset Monday afternoon at Carl Albert State College’s Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. It marked the second straight season that a girls 11th seed knocked off a sixth seed. In 2012, Arkoma’s 11th-seeded Lady Mustangs upset No. 6 Wister.
The Lady Indians played third-seeded Talihina in the championship quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon in Wister.

It was a sad weekend for baseball fans

January 21, 2013

While I was gearing up this past weekend for the 81st LeFlore County Tournament, the state's longest-running basketball tournament, being the baseball fan I am, it was a sorrowful one for me in that regard.
Three legendary baseball figures died over the weekend.
Leading this list was Stan Musial, one of the greatest St. Louis Cardinals players to ever don the red and white. “Stan the Man,” as he was known, was one of my late father's favorite players — and not just because he was a Cardinals fan.

Friday's High School Boys Basketball Roundup

January 21, 2013

PANOLA — Leflore's Caleb Smith hit the twine for 40 points as the Leflore Savages dominated the Panola Bearcats for a 67-35 win — and their fifth straight victory.
The ’Cats only trailed 23-13 at halftime, but the Savages outscored them 34-2 in the third quarter to take a 57-15 lead into the final period.
Smith's 40 points came in only three periods.
“He could have probably gotten 70 had he played the entire game,” said Daniel Caldwell, Leflore's first-year coach.
