Senior linebacker sees 'Red Out' as an extra motivator Friday night against Hilldale Hornets

When the Poteau Pirates open District 4A-4 play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Costner Stadium against the Hilldale Hornets, fans are being asked to wear red to have a “Red Out” affect on the visitors. Senior linebacker Marshall Jones believe such a spirit booster does just that.

The Spiro Bulldogs were on the cusp of being 2-1 entering this week's District 3A-8 opener at Idabel.
Instead, a turnover converted into a game-winning field goal by Roland made the Rangers a 10-7 winner to spoil the ’Dogs' homecoming game last Friday night at McClain Stadium.
The good thing is the players seemingly have put that game behind them and are focusing on the district opener at 7:30 p.m. this Friday on the road against the Warriors.

HEAVENER — The Heavener Lady Wolves ended their regular season in dramatic fashion in Tuesday's home three-way against the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers and the Howe Lady Lions.
The Lady Wolves had a pair of fifth-inning rallies to down Talihina 3-2 and Howe 9-8.
Talihina won the middle game 7-1 over Howe, but no more information on that game was reported.
Spiro 8, Wister 1: In Wister, the Lady Bulldogs (17-7) broke a 1-1 tie with a seven-run fifth inning.

Panama pitcher hits solo homer as Lady Razorbacks stun Poteau

PANAMA — Panama pitcher Taylor Eaves has made a name for herself in high school softball by baffling the opposing hitters. She made a difference in another way Tuesday afternoon.
Eaves hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie as the Lady Razorbacks upset the Poteau Lady Pirates by a score of 1-0.

PANAMA — The Panama Lady Razorbacks got a pair of wins at home to begin the week as they defeated the Wister Lady Wildcats 6-2, then beat the Keota Lady Lions 2-0.
Wister won the middle game 11-2, but no other information was reported by press time.
Pocola 4, Spiro 1: In Pocola, the Lady Indians (10-11) broke a scoreless tie with a three-run second inning, then added another run in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. Three of the four runs were unearned due to four Spiro errors.

LEFLORE — The Cameron Yellowjackets ended their regular season in fine fashion with a 13-0, three-inning, run-rule win over the Leflore Savages on Monday.
Smithville 6, Whitesboro 3: In Smithville, the Braves jumped out to a 5-0 lead after an inning to take control of the game.
Rock Creek 4, Whitesboro 1: Saturday in Bokchito, the Mustangs, no longer coached by Whitesboro Coach Bryan Cartwright's brother, Alan (who is now at Boswell), still handled the Bulldogs.

Poteau Bandit League teams go 1-2-1 with Union Christian Academy

The Poteau Bandit League squads went 1-2-1 against Union Christian Academy from Fort Smith, Ark., on Saturday at Costner Stadium.
The lone Poteau win came from the sixth-grade team, which defeated Union Christian 32-24 behind a four-touchdown performance by Kale Barcheers.
The Poteau fourth-grade team tied Union Christian 14-14 as Easton Francis and Mason Barcheers each scored a TD for Poteau.
Union Christian took the fifth-grade game 38-0 and the third-grade contest 33-0.

Poteau pitcher throws second consecutive perfect game; Lady Pirates shut out Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds

Eight days before, Poteau softball pitcher Brenna Vise threw a perfect game against the Howe Lady Lions in the winner's-bracket quarterfinals of the 2011 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament.
Monday afternoon, Vise, who had not pitched since the Howe game, returned to the pitcher's circle and was “pitcher” perfect once more. Vise faced 18 batters, the minimum in a six-inning game, and struck out nine of them en route to an 8-0, six-inning, run-rule victory over the Sallisaw Lady Black Diamonds.
