Spiro girls battle back to title game, but see fast-pitch softball season end with loss to Sequoyah-Tahlequah Lady Indians

WESTVILLE — It was basically deja vu all over again for the Spiro Lady Bulldogs softball team at the Class 3A Regional Tournamen. For the second straight year, they got to the title game, but for the second straight season the Lady Bulldogs came in second to Sequoyah-Tahlequah.
The Lady Bulldogs, who reached Friday afternoon's title game by outlasting host Westville 12-8, lost to the Lady Indians 6-0 in the title game to see their season end.

Losses to Tushka, Colbert in 2A Regional Tournament end softball season for Wister Lady Wildcats

TUSHKA — The 2012 fast-pitch softball season came to an end Friday afternoon for the Wister Lady Wildcats. The Lady ‘Cats lost 7-4 to the Tushka Lady Tigers in a loser's-bracket contest.
The Lady ‘Cats lost their regional opener 4-0 to the Colbert Lady Leopards on Thursday. They finished their season at 14-8.

Softball season comes to an end for Cameron girls

KEOTA — The 2012 fast-pitch softball season came to an end for the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets Thursday afternoon at the Class A Regional Tournament.
The Lady ’Jackets lost 16-1 to Welch, then were doubled up 6-3 by Kiefer, to end their season at 13-19.

The 2012 San Bois CASA Charity Golf Tournament will begin at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 19 at Wolf Ridge Golf Course.
The entry fee for the four-person scramble is $250. To enter a team and purchase eight mulligans, the fee will be $290, $325 to enter a team and sponsor a hole and $365 for all three. The fee to sponsor a hole only is $100.
A free barbecue lunch will be served before the tournament begins.

Poteau Pirates look to bounce back from first football loss of season, travel to Stilwell tonight

The Poteau Pirates football team went toe to toe with Class 4A's sixth-ranked Sallisaw Black Diamonds last week in the District 4A-4 opener at Costner Stadium, but eventually fell 31-21.
“We played well, and we played hard,” said Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach. “We didn't give up. It just came down to a few plays where we didn't make them and they did. That's just football, but we played very hard. There were a lot of good things (about the Sallisaw game).”

Spiro football team seeks first District 3A-8 win tonight at home, faces Idabel

The District 3A-8 season got off on the wrong foot for the Spiro Bulldogs football team last week, but the ’Dogs just happened to play a team that is thought to be the favorite to win the district title — the Stigler Panthers. The Panthers proved that point to the Bulldogs in a 48-16 win.

Pocola Indians football team looks to return to winning ways tonight against Hugo

The Pocola Indians are anxious to get back in the win column after facing two very good teams — the Quinton Savages (who beat them 30-14 in their home opener two weeks ago) and the second-ranked Vian Wolverines (who defeated them 68-0 in last week's District 2A-6 opener).
Rick Lang, Pocola's coach, said even in the preseason that Vian was going to be the team to beat in the district. After last week's game, he's even more sure of that.

Swinford wins Week 4 Pigskin Picks contest

Robert Swinford was the Week 4 winner of the Poteau Daily News’ Pigskin Picks contest.
Swinford successfully picked nine out of 11 winners, tying for first place. He won with the tiebreaker to win the $25 prize.
The contest ballot runs every Saturday during the contest period.
Winners will be announced weekly on the Pigskin Picks page.Entries for this week's contest must be in by 5 p.m. this afternoon.

Denton, Roberts named LeFlore County Bass Club's Team of the Year for 2012

After a great year, Bob Denton and Jason Roberts won the 2012 LeFlore County Bass Club's Team of the Year Award. They beat out 34 other teams, and it's a great accomplishment — considering the quality of anglers the club has had over the past few years.
Denton and Roberts hauled in 76.08 pounds of bass this season to earn $500. Andy Nance and Rodney Faulkenberry were second (68.77 pounds, $400), followed by Keith Griffith and Gary Steelman (68.66, $300), Robbie Brassfield and Keith Jones (65.29, $200) and Joey Chitwood and Tony Parker (63.84, $100).
