OU wins football home opener Saturday night

September 11, 2012

NORMAN — The Oklahoma Sooners home opener was a blowout as most expected. Florida A&M did keep the game close early, but the talented Sooners were just too much for the Rattlers and finished the game strong, eventually taking a 69-13 victory Saturday night at Owen Field.
It was a record-setting day for junior college transfer Damien Williams, who rushed for 156 yards and four touchdowns, including an 89-yarder in the third quarter. His rushing total was the most for a player in his first game at home, and he is only the fourth OU player to rush for 100 yards in each of his first two games.

September 11, 2012

TULSA — The Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team had the feeling, at least in the opionion of its coach, Bill Blankenship, that it had a chance to win the season opener Sept. 1 at Iowa State, but didn't “keep our foot down” as Blankenship described his team's play in that game.
However, Saturday's Conference USA opener against the Tulane Green Wave at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium was different as Tulsa prevailed 45-10.

Poteau makes it 2-for-2 on the road to start season; Pirates knock off Arkansas' Class 7A Van Buren Pointers

September 8, 2012

VAN BUREN, Ark. — Coach Brooks Coatney of Van Buren wanted to get a quicker start than last week. While his team drove the ball downfield fairly successfully, fumbles, however, foiled the Pointers.
Poteau scored in the first half, and then had to post two second-half touchdowns to pull out the 18-15 victory.
However, the loss may have proven costly as player Austin Barnette blew out his knee, and his status for next week was uncertain at press time. In Saturday's physical edition, due to a reporting error, the incorrect injured player is listed, and The Poteau Daily News regrets the error.
