Howe girls stay undefeated en route to LCT title; Spiro boys four-peat as LeFlore County champions; Spiro girls, Talihina boys win third-place games

A question going into the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament was seeing if the Howe Lady Lions would remain undefeated at the end of it. They answered that with an emphatic yes.
The Lady Lions clawed the Arkoma Lady Mustangs 77-50 in Saturday night’s championship game at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
The Spiro Bulldogs won the county title for the fourth straight season, downing their rivals, the Poteau Pirates, 55-49 in the boys championship contest.

The girls seeding held true to form for the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament on Friday night as the top seed, the Howe Lady Lions, and the second seed, the Arkoma Lady Mustangs, won their semifinal contests at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
The Lady Lions got past the Heavener Lady Wolves 54-40 in the first championship semifinal, then the Lady Mustangs edged the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 59-56 in a barnburner in the second semifinal.
The day began with the fifth-place games. The Whitesboro Bulldogs clawed the Wister Wildcats 56-31, while the Pocola Lady Indians defeated the Leflore Lady Savages 39-32.

Hard to believe LCT Week is over; Class A, B district assignments made known on Friday

It’s hard to believe, but the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament is in the books. It seemed like it just got started.
We had some exciting games, and crowned a new girls champion in the Howe Lady Lions and saw the Spiro Bulldogs four-peat as LCT champs.
Class A, B District Tournament Assignments Announced by OSSAA
The Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association announced on Friday the assignments for the Class A and B district tournaments that will begin the postseason parade next month.

Two wins in a row for Thompson in PDN’s Pigskin Picks Contest

After not always taking a chance in the Poteau Daily News’ Pigskin Picks Contest, Tobey Thompson got his second straight win in as many weeks.
He was one of several who picked both National Football League playoff games correctly, predicting Seattle would beat Green Bay in the NFC Championship and New England would defeat Indianapolis in the AFC Championship. However, Thompson won the tiebreaker, which was predicting the final score of the NFC Championship. He only missed the actual final score of the NFC Championship by six points. Seattle rallied to down Green Bay 28-22 in overtime.

The Poteau Kick It Club will have a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Mainstreet Medical, located on Dewey Avenue. The main item on the agenda is to organize committees and plan for the upcoming 2015 high school soccer season.

The Poteau High School basketball teams’ Pink-Out Games will be Tuesday against Spiro at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, with the girls’ game at 6:30 p.m. and the boys’ contest at 8 p.m. There will be baked goods for sale with all proceeds to be donated to the American Cancer Society.

Poteau, Spiro boys reach tonight’s LeFlore County Tournament title game

The Poteau Pirates and the Spiro Bulldogs will meet Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, but they’re going to get to see each other tonight as well.
The Pirates and the ’Dogs each won their championship semifinal contest in the 83rd LeFlore County Tournament on Thursday night at the Spiro Multipurpose Gym.
Poteau knocked off the top-seeded team, the Talihina Golden Tigers, 53-50 in the first semifinal, then Spiro proved to be too much for the Leflore Savages in a 70-47 victory.
The Pirates and the Bulldogs will meet for the county championship at 8:45 tonight.

Greenwood wrestlers spoil Poteau's Senior Night; Pirates will return to action next Thrusday at Stilwell to complete district duals; this weekend's Sallisaw Tournament canceled

The Greenwood [Ark.] Bulldogs wrestling team spoiled Senior Night for the Poteau Pirates as they left town with a 40-31 victory Thursday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
Trailing 31-22 going into the final three matches, the ’Dogs not only won all three of those bouts but did so by pin to give them the come-from-behind victory.
The Pirates were originally scheduled to participate this weekend at the Sallisaw Tournament, but it was canceled.

CASC teams split home games with Connors State; Carl Albert teams face archrival Eastern on Monday night in Wilburton

Getting a double-double of 25 points and 11 rebounds from Kilah Cummings proved to be the difference for the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in their 78-65 win over the Connors State College Cowgirls on Thursday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Despite getting 19 points, including five 3-point baskets from Derek Mack, it wasn’t enough for Vikings in their 87-66 loss to the sixth-nationally ranked Cowboys in Thursday night’s nightcap.
