What a game last Tuesday; Howe Wood Bat Tournament is big local event this week, followed next week by LeFlore County Tournament at PARC

September 4, 2012

I'm still amazed at the softball game I witnessed, or at least got to witness most of it, last Tuesday when Panama visited Poteau. The game went 14 innings before the Lady Pirates outlasted the Lady Razorbacks 1-0. The game very well could be a prelude of this month's title game at the 2012 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which will begin next Monday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex. FYI — I will put the County Tournament bracket in Saturday's edition.

It was all OSU over Savannah State

September 4, 2012

STILLWATER — It was a no-brainer that Oklahoma State would cakewalk through Savannah State Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium. It did exactly that, making carnage of the overmatched Tigers in a one-sided 84-0 rout.
No contest.
Unless you’re an OSU fan and enjoy dominance, it was boring, but even a vast majority of Poke fans felt that. Most left as the game progressed.
The Cowboys scored on 12 of 16 possessions, keeping sports information department representatives busy thumbing through media guides, looking for records being broken.

Arkansas handles Jacksonville State in Crowe's return, but Hogs could have been even better

September 4, 2012

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Arkansas Razorbacks did what they wanted to do Saturday night at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. They defeated the Jacksonville State Gamecocks 49-24 to spoil the return of Jack Crowe, former Arkansas coach for the Hogs' last two seasons in the old Southwest Conference and current coach of the Gamecocks.
When one sees that the Razorbacks (1-0) won by 25 points, one might think there were positives all around. Don't get me wrong, there were.

Werner era begins with a Poteau road victory over Durant Lions

September 1, 2012

DURANT — It was one heck of a pregame pep talk by Poteau's new football coach, Greg Werner.
“I want you to go out and dominate this game be very physical,” Werner told the Pirates before they took the field against the Durant Lions at Paul Laird Field on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. “Let people know that the Poteau Pirates are back!”
After trailing by seven points at halftime, the Pirates came out and physically dominated the Lions and won the game 28-21.

Heavener Wolves blank UCA to open season

September 1, 2012

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Heavener Wolves devoured the Union Christian Academy Eagles Friday night at Buck Wells Stadium hitting the mercy rule with just more than six minutes to play in a 35-0 rout.
The star of the game was senior running back Blake Smittle who accounted for more than 400 yards rushing and three touchdowns for the Wolves.

Talihina begins 2012 with shutout of Wilburton

September 1, 2012

WILBURTON — The Talihina Golden Tigers opened the the 2012 season against the Wilburton Diggers with an impressive 27-0 shutout Friday night.

Second-half surge leads Oaks past Bokoshe to spoil season opener

September 1, 2012

BOKOSHE — Midway through the first half, things were looking good for the Bokoshe Tigers in their season opener against the Oaks Warriors.
However, manpower and conditioning, both of which are in short supply for the Tigers in the early going, reared their ugly head as the Warriors rallied in the second half to win going away by a score of 48-34 Friday night.

Arkoma suffers more than loss at Keota

September 1, 2012

The Arkoma Mustangs took a hard hit on their opening night game against the Keota Lions at Keota in a 60-14 loss on Friday night.
In the opening defensive series, junior fullback Tyler Dailey broke his thumb. That injury would set off a spark of bad luck for the Mustangs (0-1) that will leave them effected for the rest of the season.

Spiro loses road game at Vian, while Pocola rallies against Tulsa Regent Prep

September 1, 2012

The Spiro Bulldogs lost their opener to Class 2A's No. 1-ranked Vian Wolverines in Vian Friday night by a score of 55-6 at Vian.
Pocola's Beau Kerbow scored on a 30-yard touchdown run with 1:43 left to lift the Indians past Tulsa Regent Prep 35-34 Friday night in Coweta.
Look for more details on these games in Tuesday's edition.

Strong second half by Gore lifts Pirates past Panama Razorbacks in season opener

September 1, 2012

PANAMA — For a half, things looked good for the Panama Razorbacks in their season opener Thursday night at George Ollie Stadium.
The Hogs had a 19-7 halftime lead, but a strong second half by Gore allowed the visiting Pirates to leave town with a 35-19 victory.
