If ever there seemed to be a David vs. Goliath match-up in high school football, that match-up would appear to be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at George Ollie Stadium when the Panama Razorbacks entertain Class 2A's top-ranked Vian Wolverines in a District 2A-6 contest.
The Heavener Wolves football team cannot make the Class 3A playoffs this year, but the Wolves can get their second five-win season and finish at .500 for the year. They were 5-6 and made the Class 2A playoffs last year.
The Wolves (4-5 overall, 2-4 in District 3A-8) will hit the road for their season finale at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Eufaula Ironheads (1-8, 1-5).
Editor's note — This is the first of a two-part series previewing the Carl Albert State College basketball teams, whose seasons will begin Thursday night. The Vikings season preview will be in Thursday's edition.
The Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings will open their 2012-13 basketball season at 6 p.m. Thursday against St. Gregory's University junior varsity team at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
Jeff Tadtman, CASC women's coach, will look for improvement from the Lady Vikings in the season opener.
EDMOND — The Poteau High School cross-country teams were able to keep their streaks intact with seasons with their full teams making state.
The Lady Pirates made state for the sixth straight time, and were rewarded with a top 10 finish as they came in ninth with 233 points in Saturday's Class 4A State Meet at Edmond Santa Fe High School.
Oklahoma City Mount St. Mary won the team state championship with 45 points, followed by Oklahoma City Heritage Hall (70 points), Vinita (105), Madill (143), Newcastle (187), Cache (188), Anadarko (191) and Tulsa Cascia Hall (194).
BROKEN ARROW — Four Poteau Lady Pirates softball players, Shelby Standridge, Gabba Wilson, RaeLynn Caldwell and Sidnee Ward, helped the Oklahoma Bedlam Black softball team to a pair of victories Friday night. Oklahoma Bedlam Black doubled up Tuff E Nuff 4-2 and handled the Tulsa Shootout Gold 9-2.
In the win over Tuff E Nuff, Oklahoma Bedlam Black broke a 1-1 first-inning tie with a single run in the third inning.
After the opposition tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning, Oklahoma Bedlam Black scored twice in the fifth inning to get the win.
The Poteau Pirates will have their Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Tulsa Rogers Ropers.
The Ropers were at one time one of the better schools in the state, and I understand that they won several state championships along the way. However, somewhere along the way something happened, and they completely stopped playing football.
STILLWATER — The old football adage says, “Defense wins championships.” While it wasn't a championship the Oklahoma State Cowboys football team won Saturday afternoon at Boone Pickens Stadium, it was a Big 12 victory they got.
The OSU defense played stellar after the Pokes fell behind 14-0 due to Texas Christian University takeaways as it kept the Horned Frogs scoreless the final 39:22 of the game to win going away by the score of 36-14.
How time flies when you're having fun. Can you believe that by the end of this week, the regular season for 2012 high school football will be done? It just seems like I was doing small trips to our local high schools to do media days and preparing the 2012 LeFlore County Gridiron Preview. Now, come next Friday night high school football will be over for those teams who don't make the playoffs.
