Werner era begins for real tonight for Poteau Pirates with opener against Durant

August 31, 2012

Although the new era of Poteau Pirates football has already started under Greg Werner, their new coach, the realistic beginning will commence at 7:30 p.m. tonight when the Pirates travel to meet the Durant Lions at Paul Laird Field on the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
There's nothing more than the Pirates want to do than start out 2012 at 1-0.
“Anytime you start a season, everybody has high hopes,” Werner said. “We want to get it kicked off right, and start the season right.”

Bokoshe entertains Oaks in 2012 football season opener tonight

August 31, 2012

BOKOSHE — The 2012 football season will begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight for the Bokoshe Tigers as they entertain the Oaks Warriors.
For all intents and purpose, this will indeed be nothing more than a scrimmage for the Tigers. The Tigers did not get to do any scrimmages this preseason. In fact, due to a late start to the school year, they've only been practicing about a week in pads and helmets.
“It's been a slow process,” said Tyler Massey, Bokoshe's second-year coach.

Pocola Indians open football season tonight against Regent Prep; game moved from Broken Arrow to Coweta

August 31, 2012

POCOLA — The Pocola Indians saw a heart-breaking end to their 2011 season last year. They lost three of their four final games — all three losses were in games in which they led — which kept them from making the Class 2A playoffs. They don't want that to happen tonight when they travel to meet Tulsa Regent Prep at 7:30 p.m. in Coweta.

Poteau Lady Pirates top seed for next month's LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament

August 31, 2012

Tuesday night could very well have been a prelude to what fans will see Sept. 13 at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex in the 2012 version of the LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Tournament.
When the Poteau Lady Pirates outlasted — literally — the Panama Lady Razorbacks 1-0 in a 14-inning, 3.5-hour contest, it gave the Lady Pirates the necessary edge to garner the top seed, which was determined at Wednesday night's seeding meeting at Western Sizzlin'.

The greatest Poteau Pirates football game — ever

August 31, 2012

It was the fall of 1995. All anyone was talking about all week long was the upcoming Friday night Poteau Pirates' football game against the top-ranked and undefeated Ada Cougars, who featured a tight end who would later play in the National Football League — Jeremy Shockey. Also, Brandon Daniels was the Ada quarterback.
Both teams were 7-0, and it was dubbed as the No. 1 high school game in the state for that week.

Panama Razorbacks will be lone show in county tonight; Hogs entertain Gore Pirates in 2012 season opener

August 30, 2012

There's something special about opening night. For the Panama Razorbacks, it will be doubly exciting.
First, they will begin the 2012 season at 7:30 p.m. tonight at George Ollie Stadium against the Gore Pirates. Secondly, since the game is tonight, unlike most of the state teams' openers being Friday night, it means that there should be quite a crowd tonight.
“Everybody is excited,” said Brandon Ellis, Panama's second-year coach. “It's the first game of the year, and it's on a Thursday night. We're expecting a full house. We're ready to go.”

Poteau senior lineman anxious for season opener

August 30, 2012

For Poteau Pirate senior lineman Troy Barnett, Friday night cannot get here fast enough. That's the season-opening game at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road against the Durant Lions. However, on the other hand, he doesn't want his final Pirate football season to rush by, either.
“There's parts of me that would wish it would slow down a little bit because it's my senior year,” Barnett said. “Other than that, I'm having a hard time just getting ready for it because I'm so pumped up for it — ready for it to be here.”

Heavener cross country teams open season this afternoon at Early Tiger Meet in Tahlequah

August 30, 2012

The Heavener High School cross country teams will begin their 2012 season today at the Early Tiger Meet in Tahlequah.
The Wolves return five members of last year's inaugural season of cross country — Jose Farias, Dakota McGee, Cesar Gonzales, Arturo Ortega and Octavio Sanchez. Farias was the lone Heavener runner who made last fall's Class 3A State Meet, where he placed 30th.
James Cinocca, Michael Bobo and Levi Chuculate round out the boys' roster.
