Thunder wins home opener over Blazers on Friday night after losing season opener Thursday in San Antonio

November 3, 2012

OKLAHOMA CITY — After a stunning defeat Thursday night at San Antonio thanks to Tony Parker's shot at the buzzer, the Oklahoma City Thunder returned home for its home opener Friday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland knocked off the Los Angeles Lakers in its home opener Wednesday night.
It was a tough loss to the Spurs as the Thunder held the ball and a three-point lead with just less than a minute to play. However, the trip back home was a chance for the team to get their first win of the season — and that the Thunder did.

Three local softball players make All-State Fast-Pitch Teams

November 2, 2012

Three local high school softball players received the ultimate individual honor — making the 2012 All-State Fast-Pitch Softball Team.
Poteau's Shelby Standridge and Brenna Vise made the Middle East team, while Panama's Taylor Eaves made the Small East team.
Spiro's Braylin Gray is an alternate utility player on the Middle East, while several other locals — Poteau's Gabba Wilson, Alayna Holdsworth and Kaylee Kingrey, Spiro's Kaylee Cox and Panama's Kali Crase — are All-State honorable mention as they were on the All-Region 6 Team.

Pocola football team looks to bounce back from Panama loss with home win over Mountainburg on Senior Night

November 2, 2012

POCOLA — Last week's football game had to be a very frustrating one for the Pocola Indians. For starters, they lost to their archrivals, the Panama Razorbacks 20-14, then lost any chance of a possibility of a second-place finish — and a home playoff game — with the defeat. Adding to heartache is the fact that Rick Lang, Pocola's coach, believes his team actually outplayed Panama.

Howe basketball teams entertain Smithville Friday night to begin season

November 1, 2012

The Howe High School basketball teams will welcome the Smithville squads to the Howe Gym tonight for the season openers. The girls game will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys contest at approximately 8 p.m.
The Lady Lions were 27-3 last season, and lost in the Class 2A Area Tournament consolation finals to Amber-Pocasset to miss out on a trip to state.
The good news is they return many players from that team, but the not-so-good news is that all the starters from the 2011-12 team graduated. Thus, youth will be served, especially early on, for the Lady Lions.

Bandit Bowl IX slated Saturday afternoon at Costner Stadium

November 1, 2012

The Poteau City League championship games, a.k.a. “The Bandit Bowl,” will take place beginning at noon at Costner Stadium. The third-fourth grade game will begin at noon, followed by the fifth-sixth grade contest at approximately 1:30 p.m.
The third-fourth grade Bandit Bowl will pit the Bombers against the Bears. The Bombers edged the Cowboys 6-0 in overtime last week, while the Bears outlasted the Panthers 26-19 as they broke a 19-all tie with a score with 44 seconds left.

Senior knew he had to step up for injured teammate

November 1, 2012

Last Friday night, the Poteau Pirates were trying to keep their football playoff hopes alive with a road win against the Broken Bow Savages. While that didn't happen, the Pirates likely got a moral victory despite losing 23-15 to the Savages, and had to do so with a back-up quarterback.
Poteau starting quarterback Jace Pitchford suffered a game-ending knee injury, so senior Blake Johnson had to take over running the offense.

Biggest game for Talihina set Friday night at home against Gore; Golden Tigers can finish anywhere from first to fourth in District A-6

November 1, 2012

When the District A-6 football coaches got together in the off-season to prepare all seven teams' 2012 schedule, little did they know just how unique the Week 10 slate of games were going to be.
After six weeks of district play, four teams find themselves atop the district standings at 4-1 — Talihina, Gore, Savanna and Sallisaw-Central.

Arkoma football team seeks .500 record with Friday night win over Webbers Falls

November 1, 2012

After the Arkoma Mustangs football team lost its District C-4 contest to district-leading Thackerville on Oct. 18 at Mustang Field, any playoff hopes were dashed. However, there was still a shot at a .500 record for the 2012 season.
After the Mustangs (4-5 overall, 2-4 in district play) won last week on Senior Night 54-8 over Southwest Christian, they can achieve that goal with a win Friday night in the regular-season finale at Webbers Falls. Kickoff for the District C-4 game is 7:30 p.m.
