Arkoma boys begin basketball season tonight with new coach

The 2012-13 basketball season will begin for the Arkoma Mustangs tonight with an 8 p.m. contest against the Cameron Yellowjackets at home.
The Mustangs were 6-17 last season, and will be very young this year.
“This season's success will depend on how fast the younger players can adapt to the quicker pace of high school basketball,” said Chester Johnson, Arkoma's new boys coach after taking over for longtime coach and athletic director Rick Harvey.

LEFLORE — The Leflore Savages bounced back from the Nov. 8 loss to Whitesboro by knocking off Class B's sixth-ranked Kinta Eagles at home Tuesday night, winning 61-53.
The Savages jumped out to a 17-6 lead after one period en route to a 28-17 halftime advantage.
Whitesboro 74, Buffalo Valley 52: In Buffalo Valley, the Bulldogs clawed their way to a 16-2 lead after a period and never looked back.
McCurtain 58, Howe 57: In McCurtain, the Bulldogs, who trailed 54-50 with about two minutes left to play, outscored the Lions 8-3 the rest of the way.

McCURTAIN — Despite turning the ball over 24 times Tuesday night, the Howe Lady Lions found a way to claw their way to a 59-50 road win over the McCurtain Lady Bulldogs.
Down 20-18 after a period, the Lady Lions outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-10 in the second quarter to take a 34-30 halftime lead. Then, Howe outscored McCurtain 25-20 to kept the hosts at bay.
Whitesboro 52, Buffalo Valley 43: In Buffalo Valley, the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one period.

Cowley County teams pick up road wins over CASC

Behind 22 points from Dominique McKoy and 55.3-percent shooting from the field, the Cowley County Community College Tigers came away with the 70-57 win over the Carl Albert State College Vikings on Tuesday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse.
A strong first half and a 17-point halftime lead proved to be the difference for the Cowley County's women in their 68-45 win over the Lady Vikings in the first game of Tuesday night's doubleheader.

Gun season is finally here

The weekend that many hunters look forward to all year is here. Deer gun season starts Saturday and runs for 16 days. There will be deer camps all over the state with family and friends enjoying good times and good food along with some hunting.
I have been hunting since I was about 8 years old, and I always love the time I get to spend at camp with my family and friends. The food is always better, and the memories last a lifetime. If you get a chance, make some memories of your own this year at deer camp.

Fifth-grade Bandit League team caps undefeated season with 2012 championship

VAN BUREN, Ark. — The Poteau fifth-grade Bandit League team capped a perfect season by winning the league championship Saturday afternoon with a 28-8 victory over Union Christian Academy. The team's record this season was 9-0.

Bokoshe games at Clayton postponed Monday night

The Bokoshe High School's basketball teams were scheduled to open the season Monday night at Clayton.
However, since it was discovered that it was so close to the end of football season, Bokoshe High School made the decision to postpone the games and reschedule. However, Bryan Murray, Bokoshe's girls coach, said the two schools are trying to reschedule the games, but have not found an open date at this time.
The Lady Tigers and Tigers will open their seasons Thursday night at Leflore, with the girls game at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys contest at 8 p.m.
