Fishing, hunting and a tribute to grandma

September 6, 2012

Last weekend was free hunting days in Oklahoma. I was hoping to have my email inbox full of pictures of some doves, but I didn’t get any. If you were out in the field harvesting some of those birds, send me some pictures. My readers would love to see them.

I got to do a little fishing last week with my son, Koby, and Scotty Gibson near Wister. We caught several bass with the biggest being about three pounds. Even though I reeled in the big one, Scotty Gibson had one hooked up that broke his line that may have topped mine.

Football caused some long nights for me this Labor Day Weekend

September 5, 2012

I got back from Durant at 2 a.m. Saturday after going to the Poteau football season opener.
Then, the next night, I was forced to stay up until 1:30 a.m. Sunday due to the closeness of the Oklahoma Sooners' football game at Texas-El Paso.
I was glad that Monday was a holiday, because I crashed and burned on the couch. I have not failed to watch an OU football on TV for the last five years, but I really can not get enthused on spending $39.95 to watch this Staurday's OU-Florida A&M game on pay-per-view. Leroy, you do still carry those game on the radio don’t you?

September 5, 2012

Things could not have started much better than the 2012 season did for the Talihina Golden Tigers Friday night in Wilburton. The Golden Tigers dominated the Diggers for a 27-0 road win.

The form was in Saturday's edition of The Poteau Daily News.

Football revival beginning in Poteau

September 4, 2012

Sweeping this way — yes, sweeping this way,
A mighty revival is sweeping this way.
You can find those words in most church hymnals in Poteau. While these words talk of a revival in the churches, I can since the Pirates have had a change in their philosophy and their work ethic. This old church song could be the new motto for the Poteau Pirate football team. The Pirates are on the rise, and these players and coaches are going to have a football revival that will bring the Pirates back to football glory of yester years.

Pocola's late score propels Indians to comeback victory over Tulsa Regent Prep

September 4, 2012

COWETA — Rick Lang, Pocola High School's football coach, mentioned after his team's last scrimmage about finding ways to finish games. Friday night's 2012 season opener may not be what he had in mind, but he'll take it.
Beau Kerbow's 30-yard touchdown run and Dalton Richardson's extra point with 1:43 left to play lifted the Indians to a 35-34 come-from-behind victory over Tulsa Regent Prep.

Vian proves to be too much for Spiro

September 4, 2012

VIAN — The Spiro Bulldogs knew they were going to have their hands full in their 2012 football opener on the road against Class 2A's top-ranked Vian Wolverines. They proved to be right.
The Wolverines outgained the Bulldogs 453 to 103 in total yards as Vian routed Spiro 55-6.
The Wolverines (1-0) scored 23 points in the opening period, followed by a 20-point second quarter to take control of the season opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs (0-1) will have their home opener against the Muldrow Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at McClain Stadium.

What a game last Tuesday; Howe Wood Bat Tournament is big local event this week, followed next week by LeFlore County Tournament at PARC

September 4, 2012

I'm still amazed at the softball game I witnessed, or at least got to witness most of it, last Tuesday when Panama visited Poteau. The game went 14 innings before the Lady Pirates outlasted the Lady Razorbacks 1-0. The game very well could be a prelude of this month's title game at the 2012 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament, which will begin next Monday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex. FYI — I will put the County Tournament bracket in Saturday's edition.
