Bokoshe Tigers football team glad to get first win of season, but disappointed in not getting chance to meet District C-4 leader Thackerville Friday night

October 10, 2012

BOKOSHE — The good news last Friday night for the Bokoshe Tigers football team was it got its first win of the season, downing Eagle Point Academy 36-18.
“We were glad that we got the win,” said Tyler Massey, Bokoshe's second-year coach. “We played well for four quarters.”
The win was the best game the Tigers played since their season opener in a 48-34 loss at home to Oaks, where the visiting Warriors broke a 34-all tie with two touchdowns in the game's final four minutes.

The Poteau Pirates freshmen football team was trying to keep their winning streak intact on a crisp autumn Monday night at Costner Stadium against the Broken Bow Savages.
After a slow start, the Pirates were able to get some big plays en route to a 22-6 victory — and keep their record unblemished.
The Pirates will conclude their season at approximately 7 p.m. Tuesday at Costner Stadium as they will entertain the McAlester Buffaloes to try to cap another perfect season. The game will follow the Pansy Kidd Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade games, which will begin at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Spiro handles Eufaula for big road District 3A-8 football victory

October 8, 2012

EUFAULA — Chris Bunch, Spiro's football coach, said that once his Bulldogs got past their District 3A-8 opener against Stigler (a 48-16 win by the Panthers) that the other district games were very winnable for his team. So far, he's 2-for-2.
After winning 17-0 at home over Idabel Sept. 28 at McClain Stadium, the Bulldogs headed west down Oklahoma State Highway 9 to Eufaula, and picked up a 40-14 road victory over the Ironheads to go to 3-3 overall — and, more importantly, improve to 2-1 in District 3A-8.

Friday's game shows Pirates can play with stronger teams, but now, Poteau needs strong finish to season to make postseason play

October 8, 2012

I believe that Fort Gibson could be very underrated team. The Tigers are that good, and they do deserve the love that they are getting from the pollsters. This week, they're ranked seventh in the Class 4A Poll.
Jake Gandara has to be the most impressive back that I have seen in District 4A-4 for a long time.
I guess you could call me a Poteau Pirate pollyanna, but I believe if you look hard enough you can find something good in everything.

Season didn't end quite the way everyone wanted it to on the diamond

October 8, 2012

The good news was there was one softball team which made state for the second straight season — the Panama Lady Razorbacks. There was another softball team, the Poteau Lady Pirates, which made it for the second straight year to the Class 4A Regional Tournament championship round. The Wister Wildcats baseball team made state for the sixth straight season — dating back to the May 2010 spring season.
However, the bad news was the Lady ’Backs and the ’Cats both lost in the state quarterfinals Thursday afternoon, and the Lady Pirates lost in the regional finals.
