'Goose' glad to help LCYS with its fundraiser; HOF relief pitcher has seen a lot of evolution in baseball

May 24, 2012

When the LeFlore County Youth Services organization was looking for a keynote individual to help its fundraiser to help fund its new building currently being constructed on North Broadway, The Community State Bank President Larry Spradley did not know a trip to Colorado would provide such an individual.
When Spradley went to Colorado, he happened to run into a ranch owner whose father is a Baseball Hall of Famer. One thing led to another, and Rich “Goose” Gossage came to Poteau for Thursday's LeFlore County Youth Services Golf Tournament and banquet that night.

May 24, 2012

McALESTER — Cameron High School baseball player Austin Standridge was hoping to get a chance to play for a state title during his season season — fall and/or spring — but it didn't materialize. However, he still will have a trophy for his trophy case.
Standridge won the Southeast Baseball Coaches All-Star Game's Home Run Derby Wednesday night at Mike Deak Field. He hit 14 homers total on the night. He doubled the homer output of runner-up Johnathan Samuels by a count of 8-4 in the final round.

The winning duo was Tim O'Daniel and David Kirkes, who hauled in 18.75 pounds of fish including one Kirkes caught which weighed 7.46 pounds — which wasn't even the big bass winner. They pocketed $625 for the win.

Wister outfielder makes All-State Baseball Team

May 24, 2012

The Wister High School Class of 2012's baseball players had quite a way to finish their Wildcat careers. Of their eight baseball seasons in four years, the last five were spent with trips to the state tournament — winning the Class 2A Spring State Tournament in 2011. One of those players got a special honor earlier this week.
Outfielder Caleb Hill was named to the Small East All-State Baseball Team, and he will play during the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Games Week in the last week of July in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

Important barbeque etiquette — and the good ol' summertime

May 24, 2012

This is the time of the year when I really love my job. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t think of anything else I would rather be doing for a living (except maybe fishing or hunting), but I do love my summers off.
Now when I say “off,” you must understand that I still coach summer baseball teams and junior high basketball league teams, and take kids to sports camps all through the month of June. With school being out, there is a time in between those things to fish and spend time with my family.
