Heavener football team to get challenge from Roland

September 27, 2012

The Heavener Wolves are on a two-game winning streak since losing a disappointing home opener two weeks ago to the Hartshorne Miners. Since then, the Wolves (3-1 overall and 1-0 in District 3A-8) have posted wins over Gore (31-21) and Valliant (47-17) in last week's district opener.
“We feel like we've turned the corner, and we've put that loss behind us,” said Carl Lee, Heavener's new coach. “We're heading in the right direction — or at least we think we're heading in the right direction. We're not looking back at that loss. We're just trying to get a good winning streak going.”

It is just like Christmas at my house these days

September 27, 2012

This time of the year gets my blood pumping. The start of hunting season is one day I look forward to every year. I am almost like a kid at Christmas when Oct. 1 rolls around.
As luck would have it, opening day is on a Monday this year, so I will have to wait until the evening hunt to climb into my stand this year.
I have different tree stands hung for whatever wind direction we have, and my cameras have captured some deer coming through. So, all I need now is for opening day to get here.

Poteau Bandit League teams go 1-2 against Van Buren White; fifth-grade team blanks Heavener

September 26, 2012

The Poteau Bandit League football teams went 2-2 on Saturday, but lost two of the three games played against Van Buren (Ark.) White at Costner Stadium.
The sixth-grade team defeated Van Buren White 24-6, but the fourth-grade team lost 26-0 and the third-grade team fell 19-6.
The Poteau fifth-grade team won its game, but against a different opponent — and at a different place. The Poteau fifth-graders blanked the Heavener Wolves 20-0 Saturday afternoon at Harvey Stadium because Van Buren White did not have a fifth-grade team.

Poteau girls beat Red Oak in 'Pink-Out' breast cancer awareness game on Monday; Lady Pirate senior right fielder wins home run derby

September 26, 2012

About all that was lacking at Monday's “Pink-Out” breast cancer awareness softball game as singing pop star Pink to sing the national anthem.
With players and umpires wearing pink for the occasion, the Poteau Lady Pirates defeated the Red Oak Lady Eagles 5-2.
After the game, about 15 players from both teams, and Poteau coaches Misty Collins and Laney Groom, took part in a home run derby. Poteau senior right fielder Gabba Wilson and Collins tied with five homers, but Collins conceded the title to Wilson — who was presented a pink bat for her win.

Arkoma looks to end losing streak in Friday night's home football game against Southwest Covenant

September 26, 2012

It's been a couple of rough weeks for the Arkoma Mustangs football team, which is coming off back-to-back District C-4 losses to Maud (56-6) and last week's road contest at Sasakwa (64-24).
Now, the Mustangs (1-3, 1-2 in district play) almost believe they're in playoff mode right now as they welcome Southwest Covenant from Yukon for a 7:30 p.m. Friday game at Mustang Field.

Talihina football team to step out of district play Friday night against UCA

September 26, 2012

When the new District A-6 was set up by the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association, it was an odd-football district in total team numbers — seven, as opposed to the customary eight.
So, this week was the odd week for the Talihina Golden Tigers, who aren't playing a District A-6 foe this week. So, the choices were two — either take a week off or play somebody. The Golden Tigers chose the latter.
The Golden Tigers will play at home for the first time in three weeks at they will entertain Union Christian Academy from Fort Smith, Ark., at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Doc Robinson Stadium.

Bokoshe Tigers seek first 2012 football win Friday night in road game against Midway

September 26, 2012

BOKOSHE — The Bokoshe Tigers football team originally was slated to have had an off date last week. Instead, since both the Tigers and the Webbers Falls Warriors were open, they decided to meet last Friday night in Bokoshe.
With the fact that the Tigers are an injury-filled squad, the open date would have been welcomed. Instead, the visiting Warriors defeated the Tigers 69-0 in a game stopped at halftime by the mercy rule.
With the Tigers (0-4, 0-3 in District C-4) so injured, the week off may not have been as beneficial as hoped.
