Panama boys basketball coach going to 'retire'; 'Czar of Coaching' will be assistant boys basketball coach at Greenwood (Ark.) High School

July 20, 2012

PANAMA — Some decisions are not easy to make. Just ask Panama High School Boys Basketball Coach Greg Nichols, a.k.a., “The Czar of Coaching.”
After quite a period of time, Nichols made the decision on Wednesday to retire after 34 years of coaching, 29 of which were spent in Oklahoma — including stops at Panama and Heavener.
“It was an extremely hard decision to make,” Nichols said. “You hate to leave players you've gotten close to. That was the hard part. It was a tough decision. I kicked it around for a long time before I finally decided to do it (on Wednesday).”

Poteau Lady Pirate basketball player Kaitlan Standridge went to participate in the United States Junior National Basketball Team tryouts on May 20 at Lighthouse Sports Complex in Oklahoma City. The goal was to make the cut from across the nation to be invited to play in next week's U.S. International Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. She did just that.
“I really didn't think this would happen,” Standridge said. “I have never really foreseen myself coming this far in basketball. I've developed a love for the game of basketball like I have over the past two years.”

Buccaneers make PeeWee state title game, but Rebels eliminated

July 13, 2012

CUSHING — The good news is there will be a LeFlore County OK Kids peewee baseball team playing for a state title tonight. However, there won't be a second local team in the championship game, this year anyway.
The Poteau Buccaneers stayed perfect for the 2012 OK Kids PeeWee State Tournament with a 15-3 rout of the Coleman BRW Thursday night in the winner's-bracket final.
The Buccaneers will play at 6 p.m. tonight for the state title, but they won't get to play their fellow Poteau team for it.
