Team Fairless wins latest LeFlore County Bass Club tournament on Wister

The LeFlore County Bass Club had its fifth tournament of the 2012 circuit Saturday at Ward's Landing on Wister Lake. There were 30 boats which had 58 excited anglers who caught a collective total of 127 fish weighing a combined 302.14 pounds. The average fish weighed 2.38 pounds, and 22 limits were caught.
The Fairless duo of Eric “Hulka” and “Smilin'” Ray came out on top with a total of 16.66 pounds to earn $725.

Spiro baseball seniors glad to finally make state

SPIRO — For Spiro Bulldog baseball seniors, this week was beginning to look more and more that it would not happen for them.
However, after coming up so close the last couple of seasons, the Bulldogs finally knocked the door down to the Class 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs will meet Verdigris at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the state quarterfinals at Edmond Memorial High School.
The ’Dogs beat a longtime nemesis to win last weekend's Class 3A Regional Tournament, the Eufaula Ironheads.

Wister baseball seniors want to go out with another state title

WISTER — This spring high school baseball season marks the fifth consecutive high school baseball season in which the Wister Wildcats have ended it with a state-tournament appearance. The ’Cats, who will play the Oktaha Tigers at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park in the Class 2A State Tournament quarterfinals, have made state in either the spring or the fall since the 2010 spring season.

Carl Albert baseball team begins Region II Tournament this afternoon in Bartlesville; Vikings get Redlands Cougars for fifth time in a week

After a “grind” of a season, as Carl Albert State College Baseball Coach Mark Pollard calls the regular season, the postseason has arrived for the Vikings as they will begin play in the Region II Tournament, which begins today and ends Sunday at Bartlesville's Doenges Ballpark.
The Vikings (37-19) will meet a team they have played for the last four games of the regular season — the Redlands Community College Cougars. The Vikings and the Cougars do battle at noon today.

Poteau soccer boys fall in state semifinals to Mount St. Mary

OKLAHOMA CITY — For the fourth straight game, the Poteau Pirates soccer team was forced to hit the road in the Class 4A playoffs. The first three games, the Pirates found a way to get the job done, but against the Mount Saint Mary Rockets, their run at a state championship came to a screeching halt as they lost 1-0 to the Rockets in a shootout.
The Pirates (10-6) dominated everywhere except on the scoreboard. In the two halves of regulation and the two overtime periods the teams played, the Pirates had 20 good shots on goal while the Rockets could only put 11 shots on goal.

Cameron golfer ties for 14th at Class 2A State Tournament

HINTON — Cameron sophomore Kody Whitehead tied for 14th at the Class 2A State Tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course. His three-round total was 79-80-81—240.
Whitehead missed by three shots in being in a playoff for the 10th-place medalist, which eventually was won by Amber-Pocasset's Brandon Pfeifle — who was in a three-way tie at 237 after the initial 54 holes.
Rejoice Christian's Justin Strathe was the individual state champion with a 74-74-71—219, winning by two shots over Luther's Ryan Stults (77-73-71—221).

Tonight, the Wister Wildcats baseball team will play Oktaha in the Class 2A State Tournament at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park in the state quarterfinals. These boys are making their fifth straight trip to state. I would like to wish them the best of luck!

There were some hunters that fared pretty well during turkey hunting season. Russell Broussard spent 3.5 hours on a hunt before taking a nice bird last week. Nathan Janway took his daughter, Cheyann Smith, out on Saturday, and she shot a jake.

Poteau, Heavener softball players make Large East Slow-Pitch All-State Team

Last fall, Poteau Lady Pirate softball player Briley Benson made the Large East Fast-Pitch All-State Softball Team. This spring, two slow-pitch players received the same honor.
Poteau's Natalee King and Heavener's Logan Hinds, both of whom are soon-to-be Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings, were named to the Large East Slow-Pitch All-State Team.
King, who was named the 2012 LeFlore County Slow-Pitch County Tournament Most Valuable Player, batted .522 with four home runs, an on-base percentage of .625 and a slugging percentage of .774.
