Top four seeds reach winner's-bracket semifinals at LeFlore County Slow-Pitch Tournament

The top four seeds in the 2012 LeFlore County Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament all reached the winner's-bracket semifinals with wins on Monday night at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex — but it wasn't easy.
Poteau had to use a 13-run sixth inning to finally put away the pesky Spiro Lady Bulldogs 17-4.
The Heavener Lady Wolves needed runs in their last at-bat to down the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers 9-7.
The Pocola Lady Indians edged the Wister Lady Wildcats 4-3, and the Panama Lady Razorbacks doubled up the Whitesboro Lady Bulldogs 10-5.

The Poteau Pirates split their home three-way Monday at Town Creek Park, blasting the Idabel Warriors 12-2 but falling 8-7 to the Sallisaw Black Diamonds.
In the win over the Warriors, the Pirates jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the opening inning as Poteau sent 16 batters to the plate.
In the loss to the Black Diamonds, Sallisaw's Derek Nation hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to break a 7-7 tie to lift the visitors from Sequoyah County to victory.
The Pirates tied the game in the fifth inning at 7-7 on an RBI single by Didway and an RBI double by Stephen Smith.

Panama Razorbacks handle Arkoma Mustangs in tune-up for this week's tournament

ARKOMA — Arkoma Coach Mark Weatherton had a scheduling quirk this week with his Mustangs facing five games. He had to rest a few of his starters and save them for games later this week. The Ponies ended up taking a 20-3 drubbing by the hands of the Panama Razorbacks Monday afternoon.

Poteau track teams win Heavener Invitational as several local athletes, relay teams place

HEAVENER — The Poteau High School track teams swept the team titles at the Heavener Invitational April 2 at Harvey Stadium.
The Pirates scored 91 points, while the Lady Pirates had a whopping 134 points.
Trevor Shankle won the shot put (46-.25), while Austin Barrette, Jesse Woodson, Michael Reynolds and Kendrick Hardaway won the 400-meter relay (44.31 seconds).
Woodson was runner-up in the 200-meter dash (22.95 seconds), while coming in third in the 100-meter dash (11.16).
Nico Hall was second in the 3,200-meter run (11:19), while placing third in the 1,600-meter run (5:13.72).

Spiro Lady Bulldog sprinter wins title Thursday at Beggs Invitational

BEGGS — Spiro Lady Bulldog sprinter Tyeecha Hawkins won the 100-meter dash Thursday at the Beggs Invitational. Her winning time was 12.4 seconds.
Hawkins was runner-up in the 200-meter dash (26.63 seconds), Meochea McKesson was third (34-1) and Philicea Mack was fifth (34-3) in the shot put.
The 800-meter relay was third (1:54.2) and the 400-meter relay was fourth (52.38 seconds).
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs were sixth with 46 points. Lincoln Christian won the girls' team title with 145 points, with Oklahoma City Millwood a distant second (71 points).

PKMS Lady Raiders track teams have successful 2012 season

It was another successful track season for the girls at Pansy Kidd Middle School this year. The eighth grade had their second undefeated season. They also teamed up with the freshman girls to snag the gold at Greenwood and Wilburton. The seventh grade took home three first-place plaques and a runner-up plaque, with their highest score being a whopping 246 points at its own meet.

Poteau girls go 4-1 in last week's Oktaha Tournament to finish in second place; Pocola Lady Indians split six games to finish eighth

OKTAHA — The Poteau Lady Pirates and the Pocola Lady Indians represented LeFlore County at the Oktaha Tournament last week.
The Lady Pirates went 4-1 in the event. They beat Atoka 9-0, Fort Gibson 12-3, Sequoyah-Tahlequah 6-2 and Sallisaw 8-0. Their only loss was a 17-4 loss to Tahlequah in the title game.
As for the Lady Indians, they defeated Quinton 17-8, got a forfeited win over Warner and beat Keys (Park Hill) 7-5. However, they lost 8-0 to Sequoyah-Tahlequah, 10-1 to Fort Gibson and 11-8 to Henryetta to finish eighth out of 16 teams.

Girls are needed to play for an age 12-and-younger softball team in the Green Country Softball League. Games will take place at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex. The team will practice in Cameron. For additional information or to register, call Mike House at (918) 658-5510.

The Poteau Lady Pirates softball program will have an age 6-7 coach-pitch league beginning in May and end its season in June.

Now that the 2012 LeFlore County Baseball Tournament is complete, Spiro Coach Paul Croft did want to make sure that all fans were aware of why the tournament took place in Spiro and not Arkoma — which was the host school.

It takes two title games, but Wister gets past Spiro to win tournament; Wister's Crane named MVP; Pocola Indians claim third place

SPIRO — It took every game slated in the 2012 LeFlore County Baseball Tournament to decide the champion this year, but the Wister Wildcats were able to dethrone the Spiro Bulldogs.
After the ‘Dogs forced the second title game with a 9-4 win Friday night, the ’Cats came back to win the winner-take-all contest Saturday afternoon by a score of 5-3.
The Bulldogs, who suffered a 7-5 loss to Wister in Thursday night's winner's-bracket final, reached the championship round with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Pocola Indians on Friday. The Indians finished third.
