Last year, the Poteau High School track teams put on more of a practice meet when they had the Poteau Invitational. Not so this year.
There will be approximately 20 boys and 20 girls teams coming to town for today's meet, which will begin at 1 p.m. this afternoon at Costner Stadium.
Can you believe that the 2012 spring postseason has arrived â at least for a lot of our baseball and slow-pitch softball teams?
It's district-tourament week for the Class A and B baseball teams as well as all of the slow-pitch softball teams with the exception of Poteau.
The complete district-tournament schedule is listed at the end of this column.
One Last Tournament
There is one last regular-season tournament in which there will be LeFlore County representation as the Poteau Pirates will be in the Fort Gibson Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
WILBURTON â The good news was the Poteau Pirates reached Saturday's title game of the Coal Miner's Classic, but the not-so-good news was they got to meet one of the best teams around in the Eufaula Ironheads who defeated the Pirates 10-2 in Saturday's title game.
The Pirates reached the title game with a 11-7 victory over the Muldrow Bulldogs Friday night.
The Heavener Wolves, the other LeFlore County team in the field, were eliminated in the consolation semifinals by the host Wilburton Diggers 4-3 in 11 innings on Friday.
SALLISAW â The Spiro Bulldogs tried to rally to win the 2012 Tiger Shootout title game on Saturday, but they came up a run short as they lost 5-4 to the Red Oak Eagles, who eliminated the Pocola Indians 8-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The âDogs reached the title game with a 5-1 win over the Westville Yellowjackets earlier in the day after defeating the Keys (Park Hill) Cougars 4-3 in nine innings in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Cameron Yellowjackets lost the consolation championship game on Saturday, falling 7-3 to the Vian Wolverines.
BATTIEST â The Heavener Lady Wolves split their final two games at the Battiest Spring Classic on Saturday, losing 2-0 to Broken Bow â which lost 10-9 to Heavener on Friday afternoon â after beating Buffalo Valley 15-7.
The Howe Lady Lions, the other LeFlore County team in the tournament field, lost 7-2 to the Hugo Lady Buffaloes to be eliminated from the event.
In Heavener's win over Buffalo Valley, the Lady Wolves, whose home game Monday with Hugo was canceled by the Lady Buffaloes, broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run second inning for a 5-2 lead â an advantage they never lost.
The Panama High School baseball program is sponsoring a fundraiser in connection with Dunn Ford in Stigler and Ford Motor Company.
From noon to 4 p.m. Saturday in front of the Panama Elementary School, people can test drive up to six different vehicles, with $20 per car test driven being donated to the Panama High School baseball program.
