Wildlife Department halts WMA baiting starting on July 1 in spite of public input

April 12, 2012

Not too long ago, I attended a public opinion meeting regarding baiting in Oklahoma Wildlife Management Areas. While at the meeting we were told by Jody Hemphill that “most of the people” who commented on the issue were “against” stopping baiting in the WMAs, we were also told that the problems were happening in WMAs out in the western part of the state, not here in the east. Specifically, hunters were placing bait in WMAs, and ,when they came back to hunt, another hunter would be set up over the bait. This caused physical and verbal disputes between the hunters.
