CASC teams suffer losses to Redlands

Behind a 29-24 lead at halftime, the Redlands Community College Lady Cougars won 66-56 over the Carl Albert State College Lady Vikings in Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference action Thursday night in El Reno.
The Redlands Cougars picked up an impressive 86-63 home win over the Vikings to complete the sweep of CASC.
The CASC teams will play at home Monday night at Mick Thompson Fieldhouse against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. The women's game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men's contest at 8 p.m.

Poteau wrestlers get wins over Talihina, FS Southside; Golden Tigers get three wins in dual against host team

FORT SMITH, Ark. — The Poteau Pirates ended their week of wrestling action with a pair of dual wins Thursday night. The Pirates handled the Talihina Golden Tigers 77-6 and tied host Fort Smith Southside at 36-all but got the dual win on a tiebreaker in having the most wins by pin (six).
In the win over Talihina, the Pirates (13-5) won 12 of the 14 matches. Of those wins, six were by pins by Tyler Tustin (132 pounds), Mason Jones (138), Kaydon Evans (145), Trevin Smith (182), Gabe Sanchez (195) and Luis Gonzalez (220).

PYWC member wins title at USJOC last weekend; several members place, participate

OKLAHOMA CITY — Poteau Youth Wrestling Club member Dauntay Warren won his weight class title in the novice portion of the 2012 United States Junior Open Championships last weekend at Satte Fair Arena.
Warren was one of four novice wrestlers and four open wrestlers who placed in the event for the Poteau Youth Wrestling Club.
In the novice division, Caden Warren was third, while Ethan Carey and James Moss was fifth.
In the open division, Luke Brooks was fourth, Kaydon Evans was fifth and Dalton Edwards and Ross Johnson were sixth.

Poteau youth wrestler earns certificate for Academic All-State

Landon Thornburg, age 6, was awarded a certificate of Governor's Commendation for Oklahoma Youth Wrestling Academic All-State during last weekend's United States Junior Open Championships at Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center.
Thornburg, the son of Jason and Ashley Thornburg and grandson of Kenny and Linda Newman, had to have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher as well as have completed a community service project.

A look back at 2011 in LeFlore County athletics — and my JH County Tournament All-Tournament Team

As I look at 2011 in the rearview mirror, I, too, am proud of the exploits of champions of LeFlore County. Kudos to the Talihina Golden Tigers and their Class 2A state basketball championship. Most people don’t realize they were only four points away from being a three-time state champion.
Tyler Tustin gained the second state championship for the Pirates in wrestling, and he has two more years to wrestle.

Alumni football is coming to Poteau. Gridiron Alumni is planning several full contact alumni football games.
Gridiron Alumni travels the nation pitting old football rivals against each other one more time. Players are needed to sign up, and the first 40 players on each team get to play.
The team that gets 30 people registered first gets home-field advantage.
Last year, hundreds of players and thousands of fans swarmed stadiums to watch their home town heroes strap it on one more time.
This year, Gridiron Alumni would like to bring alumni football to the whole state of Oklahoma.

Steelman, Wann win 2012 He-Man Tournament last weekend

The 2012 He-Man Women Haters Club Poteau Chapter had its second annual He-Man Polar Bear Bass Tournament Saturday at Grasshopper Landing on Broken Bow Lake. There were 12 boats in the tournament field, with the temperatures in the 60s — it was just a perfect day.
Gary “The Jig Master” Steelman and Judd “Van Damm” Wann took home first place with a haul of 13.15 pounds and pocketing $1,000.
Haskell “Hack Attack” Higgins and “The Boy Wonder” A.J. Higgins came in second (11.64 pounds), while Jason “Glitter” Wickware and “The” Chad Warner came in third (11.23).

Poteau teams split home games with Sallisaw Tuesday night

The Poteau High School basketball teams split their home doubleheader with Sallisaw Tuesday night at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Pirates used their defense to polish off the Black Diamonds by a score of 61-43, but the Lady Pirates had problems with the Lady Black Diamonds' pressure defense and struggled over the final 15 minutes of the game in losing 65-39.
