Leflore boys defeat Whitesboro in opening round of 2012 Rock Island Conference Shootout; Leflore girls upset Quinton in battle of Lady Savages before losing in semifinals to Panola

LEFLORE — The Leflore Savages advanced to Friday night's championship semifinals of the 2012 Rock Island Conference Shootout with a 67-50 win over the Whitesboro Bulldogs Thursday night at the Leflore Gym.
The Savages were to play Kinta Friday night with the winner playing for the championship at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the new Wilburton High School Gym. The loser will play for third place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Arkoma, Wister hoop teams split Thursday night twinbill

WISTER — The Arkoma and Wister high school basketball teams split their games Thursday night at the Wister Gym for Wister's homecoming.
The Lady Mustangs defeated the Lady Wildcats 56-53 in overtime, then the ‘Cats beat the Mustangs 81-50.

Pocola basketball teams sweep Cameron Thursday night at home

POCOLA — The new year got off on the right foot for the Pocola High School basketball teams as they took a pair of games from Cameron Thursday night at the Pocola Gym.
The Lady Indians got things started with a 47-27 win over the Lady Yellowjackets. Then, the Indians stung the ’Jackets 73-63.

Poteau wrestlers pin loss on Quinton Thursday night

QUINTON — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team rebounded from Tuesday night's dual loss at Vian with a 51-30 victory over the Quinton Savages Thursday night.
The Pirates (10-5) won nine matches, six of which came by pinfall. Tyler Tustin (132 pounds), Tanner Sanders (145), Dakota Hornbuckle (152), Khy Mote (160), Trevin Smith (170) and Derek Francis (180) all recorded pins.
Will Longenbaugh (126 pounds) won by decision, while Devin Anderson (113) and Chevy Galetka (195) got forfeits.

Watching the 2012 Leflore County Junior High Tournament unfold with the High School County Tournament Jan. 16-21, old terms such as, “blood is thicker than water,” “the acorn does not fall far from the tree” and “the cream will always rise to the top" come to mind.
The Junior High Tournament is in its infancy compared to the granddaddy of all county Tournaments in Oklahoma.
There are many three generations of coaches and athletes in the Junior High Tournament as well as the High School County Tournament.

Football is over now for Sooners

Well, the football season is finally over for the Oklahoma Sooners.
Thank goodness they beat a very good Iowa team. One thing that still bothers me is the fact that the Sooners' defense, especially the secondary. runs in cycles. The Sooners are either very good or they are very horrid. It looks more and more like the Secondary Coach Willie Martinez is going to be the sacrificial lamb, but I am beginning to listen to my son, Joey, who has questioned the defensive play calling of Brent Venable for at least five years now.

Consolation quarterfinals were in the spotlight on Day 3 of the 2012 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament, which is taking place at both Poteau High School's Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse and Pansy Kidd Middle School.
In boys consolation quarterfinal action Wednesday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse, Arkoma got past Fanshawe 50-31, Pocola handled Whitesboro 43-27, Leflore beat Bokoshe 48-40 and Hodgen defeated Monroe 42-9.

Talihina teams open Longhorn Invitational with wins; Golden Tigers, new coach get first victory of season with 11-point win over Marlow Outlaws

LONE GROVE — The Talihina High School basketball teams got the new year off on the right foot at the Longhorn Invitational Tournament at the Gary Scott Center.
The Golden Tigers got their first win of the season, and in the process got their new coach, Darrick Farriell, his first win with his new team, as they handled the Marlow Outlaws 51-40 in the opening round Thursday afternoon.

It took two days, but the first upset of the 2012 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament took place Tuesday afternoon at Poteau High School's Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse.
The Cameron Yellowjackets, seeded sixth, upset the third-seeded Spiro Bulldogs 37-34.
However, the other top boys seeds and three of the top four girls seeds advanced to Friday's championship semifinals.

HOWE — The Howe boys were able to outlast Keota's 58-56 Tuesday night at the Howe Gym in a battle of Lions.
Heavener 63, Hartshorne 28: In Hartshorne, the Wolves (4-4) reached the .500 mark with the win. Trailing 10-9 at the end of the first quarter, Heavener outscored Hartshorne 54-18 the rest of the way.
