A look back at the 2011 fishing year

December 22, 2011

With this being my last column for 2011, I thought we'd take a look back at the season that was on the lakes.
The first LeFlore County Bass Club tournament took place March 5 at Broken Bow Lake. Steve “Hard” Core and “Good Luck” Chuck Restine won first place with a haul of 18.81 pounds of bass — which included Steve big bass winner of 7.33 pounds which was good for $230 — which earned them $575 for the win. Jason “Wick” Wickware and Russ “Pop” Warner were second (14.12 pounds, $345), while Robbie “The Bruiser” Brassfield and Keith “Stone” Jones were third (9.22 pounds, $230).

Sports Briefs

December 22, 2011

In Tuesday's edition, the Cage Notes Column had the wrong date for when the 2012 LeFlore County Junior High Tournament Guide will be published.
It will be published on Dec. 31, the Saturday edition prior to the tournament beginning Jan. 2, 2012.
The tournament will run Jan. 2-7, 2012.
The Poteau Daily News regrets the error.

TALIHINA — The Christmas Break for the Talihina High School basketball teams began with a split of their home games against Broken Bow Tuesday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.

Former Talihina coach gets honored by court being named in his honor

December 22, 2011

TALIHINA — When one looks at all the Talihina High School basketball success, both boys and girls, one name is pretty much cemented there — Chris Gillespie.
Last season, his final at the coach of the Golden Tigers, Gillespie guided them to the Class 2A state title in the fourth of four straight trips to state — after a quarterfinal finish and two state runner-up finishes in the previous three trips. He also had success with the Lady Golden Tigers program.

Wade, Young lift Arkansas past Eastern Kentucky; Former CASC Viking leads Colonels in scoring

December 22, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Mike Anderson won't complain about wins, but the Arkansas coach is ready to see improved shooting from the Razorbacks.
Mardracus Wade led a balanced attack with 13 points and BJ Young added 12 to lift Arkansas (7-3) to a 71-57 win over Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday night. The Razorbacks shot just 32 percent, but they connected on 29-of-35 free throws.
Arkansas scored 25 points off 19 turnovers by Eastern Kentucky, which had a four-game winning streak snapped. Former Carl Albert State College Viking Jaron Jones led the Colonels (7-6) with 16 points, 11 in the second half.
